Need a Laptop for Work and Mild Gaming

Hi guys,

Just a question, I'm looking for a laptop that will enable me to perform my work with no issue of slowness or waiting for programs to load and also something that will play games like WoW and Diablo 3 reasonably well for Medium-High graphics.

I was looking at the Metabox N150RD (actually the N170RD because the bigger screen for a small price upgrade isn't too bad), but by the time I get what I'm happy with, the cost is around $1600 (Add-on the Booster Pack 1).

I'm having trouble finding a laptop I need for a reasonable price - I seem to always find higher end laptops which will be too excessive, but anything sub-$1200 seems like it's a waste of money. I'm not finding that sweet spot of power vs cost….

Anyone got any ideas for me?

My spec preference is as follows:
17" screen, 16gb (could do fine with 8gb) RAM, GTX 960M graphics (or is 950M ok for simple gaming requirements?), i5/i7
My budget is $1000-$1500 (but the lower the better)
Harddrive space isn't an issue, I have upgrade SSDs ready to go. I already have an operating system as well.

  • My suggestion for a cheap option: http://www.graysonline.com/retail/n550jk-cn451h-r/computers-…

At the top of your budget, something like this would go nicely, and gives you the bigger screen you're after:

A 940M (or the older 750M or 850M) is fine for light gaming at 1080p. You can get away with a dual core ULV processor as well, if you're not going to run anything heavy.

    • That's what I was thinking. Metabox are the only devices I've found to be truely worth their value. ASUS ROG or Acer and other brands tend to pay a little more for the branding.

      • Have you considered slightly used gaming laptops on eBay? or do you really want an up to date laptop?
i've got my asus ROG g550jk last year for 800 on eBay and it's in pristine condition.

    • Yeah, that's exactly the route I'm looking at.

        • I did.

I got the Metabox Alpha N170RD with the following:
17.3" FHD Matte 72 Gamut LED
          Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M
Core i7-6700HQ Processor (6M Cache up to 3.50 GHz
          16GB DDR3 1600MHZ
          850 EVO 250GB M.2 SSD
          No Hard Drive Selected
Intel 8260 AC Dual Band WIFI/BT
          DVD Slim Line
          No Operating System Selected
          2 Year Metabox Platinum Care

$1640 after shipping and payment fees.

I've been using it for a couple weeks and it's worked perfectly. I got a Windows 10 license key out of my MSDN subscription.

It's a very nice device and I'm glad I bought it.

        • @Cheap Charlie:

Sure will, it'll only play Blizzard games mostly and it works great as a working laptop too :)
