Where Should I Book Car Rental for Italy? Also Please Share Promo Code if You Have One

I am looking into booking a car to comfortably fit 4 people, the driving will be shared between 2 drivers for 17 days in June. Has to be automatic as well. There seems to be big variation in price and quality between some smaller companies such as Sicily by Car and the international companies such as Europcar. Pick up and drop off will also be at different locations. Is there any good deals going around ? And can you please recommend me a good rental booking company to go through. Thank you.

  • I used holidayautos. they are a comparison site. I hired a car from Paris and then drove cologne, prague, vienna, venice, nice, barcelona, charles de gaule airport over a 3 week period in Oct 2013 and cost $37ish a day. the rate was good - best I could see at the time. sign up for their newletters and they'll send you deals.

    4 people? is that 2 adults + 2 kids or 4 adults?

Nissan Micra Auto is $ 730.44 was for 16 days in June ($45.63 per day)

Toyota Auris Auto $ 847.30 ($52.94 per day)

    • 4 adults, both drivers over age 25. Thanks - will look at holidayautos. What was the company you actually booked with in the end for your trip?
Looking at Mid-size car options. Also need to ensure that CDW is included. Also if you have an existing promo code that you don't plan to use please share :-) Thank you

  • La Porchetta?

  • Your're going to risk your life driving in Italy !? They only know 2 things on a car - the accelerator & the horn + many arm waving & finger gestures with loud shouting. Good luck.

    • Good point. I need to learn how to swear in Italian and get a car with fastest accelerator and loudest horn.

  • Remember to go anti-clockwise around the roundabouts, we lost count the number of times our drivers instinctively started going clockwise around them when there wasn't any traffic to show us the proper way…

  • I have used these guys before when hiring a car in Adelaide, they were the cheapest then: http://www.rentalcars.com/.
I have also used this company, again for Adelaide: http://www.economycarrentals.com/

  • Any luck Nia Grabzo?

I'm am in an almost identical situation - looking to hire a mid size car for 4 adults in Italy in June.

I have used Europcar in Sicily before (last July) - I got a great rate at the time ~$37 (AUD) a day - this was a small Fiat Punto though. Looking now the best I can find is approx ~$70 AUD / day with the bigger companies (Eurocar / Hertz). I feel as though there is less to worry about with the bigger companies (fraud, being stung on hidden extras) but I'm also willing to try other services if people have had good experiences.

Europcar currently has a '25% off base rate Italy' (https://www.europcar.com.au/deals/international-car-hire/ita…) however I cannot find a branch that will let me pay online to receive the 25% discount.

ADDIT - spoke to Europcar online and they said the 25% off is only for residents of UK, Germany, Austria, Italy (and a few other European countries) - unfortunately this isn't stated on the terms and conditions. Bit silly.

  • Finding an automatic that is cheap in Italy is going to be difficult unfortunately. I've just had a look and they all seem to be 30%-40% more than the manual version. Is it that you can't drive a manual or that the gear stick is on the other side that's an issue? It really isn't that difficult at all.

Depending where you want to pick up/drop off my go to comparison sites for Europe are VroomVroomVroom and AutoEurope. I usually find they offer far better prices than booking through the big brands direct, even in Australia for that matter!
