I don’t think they will actually sell that many tickets because few people will spontaneously decide they want to spend 10 days in Australia.

Great deal. Could you say book it and just do the MELB/AUS >>> LAX?

    • No.

      • Can someone expalin more.

I am not a frequent flyer.

          Hi Chill,

If you miss the first leg, your second leg is automatically cancelled.

The reason they have this policy is to avoid people doing the very thing you have suggested.

They can be very strict on this, I once missed a leg of a very long flight and because it was with multiple carriers, assumed my return was fine. I booked a more expensive one way and was then told that because one airline operated the whole ticket, my return leg was cancelled and despite my pleas and explanations, they would not budge.

I booked a return flight with cancellation and tried checking into the original flight, it wouldn't work but then did on the mobile version! So I managed to use the flight home in the end!

So my first two lines were the answer and thought I'd share my experience of the policy in force! I would not risk hoping the flight still worked on the mobile version though!

  • Interesting, if I am in the states ATM and need a one way ticket home could I just book the return leg for a year later…

    • In your circumstance you could if you wanted to come back (depending on the dates available), or just book a normal time and not take the return. Airlines won't chase you after for missing the leg, it is just if you miss an earlier leg they cancel the rest.

  • For those in Oz wanting to take advantage of this you can try the following.

Fly to Hawaii One way with Jetstar, the oneway to say Atlanta.

Then pick up this deal to Oz, and dont catch the return leg, or alternatively book the return, so you can fly back to the US 6 months time, then make your way back to Hawaii and jetsar to Oz (2 trips)

But while it may be a bit cheaper ($385 s USD (about $A550) Given cost of Jetstar Hawaii leg and Hawaii to Mainland US) Qantas and AirNZ fares around $900+ arent much more.

  • Sometimes you can get good fares if you don't mind passing thru Fiji or Auckland. Savings to be had but to be honest flying can be so exhausting the real deal is just getting a good fare on a direct flight, especially on one over 10hrs
