NAB ATM Error -- What Happened to My Money (UK Debit Card)

I went to a NAB ATM to withdraw $800 in cash using my UK debit card (I have most funds going there now as I'm no longer Australia based).

It was making the noise like it wanted to disperse the funds but then an error came up with the screen saying "Machine Error" with no money being dispersed.

When I checked my online balance, the $800 was taken out.

I called NAB and got the run around for a bit since no one really knew what's suppose to happen or how to handle it. Eventually I got passed off to someone in the credit cards department and they said that if the money is taken out already, then the ATM won't return the funds. Since they don't "keep" any details, I've got to go to my UK bank, inform them and the UK bank has to initiate the request to get the funds.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes normally you contact your bank and they will contact NAB and if they find the discrepancy when the machine is balanced they should credit you. I guess it will be the same even though it's an overseas bank.

    • how long does it usually take?

      • Usually only a day or two, they just have to reconcile transactions with the daily journal roll once you flag the issue…they've probably already noted the machine balance discrepancy (over funds) & are possibly already in the process of tracing the errant withdrawals.

That said, clearing the funds back to your OS bank might take a little longer…

I used to process them at work, but just domestic ones, and the card issuer had to issue the refund within 3 weeks (or request an extension), it depended on the bank but from memory usually about a week or 2 was the normal timeframe. I'm not really sure how long it will be for you an overseas bank.

      • It's happened to me twice with NAB when trying to withdraw money. It took 2 weeks for the money to be credited back into my account. Safe to say that I am no longer a NAB customer.

        • Yeah I have to say that I got the worst customer service with NAB. Their rep made it sound like it was my fault and that I should grateful to get the money back at all. What if I was withdrawing my lifesavings of $1000 or whatever from the ATM but because of their ATM's problem, that $1000 would be stuck for 2 weeks?

  • I had this happen in china using my ing card. I lost my **** at the Chinese in the bank, as I was really cut, but in the end one bloke said ring your Australian bank. Surprisingly when I did it was simple, and they worked it out in matter of days for me. So don't be too upset just yet, least you are dealing with English speaking counterparts.

  • had this happen to a local bank and took over a month to get my money back, from my own bank, yes i switched afterwards.
bank needs to count money in atm and confirm discrepancy to credit you back

  • I had this happen in Tromso, Norway when I tried withdrawing money from the ATM with my citibank card as well. It didnt even print me out a receipt showing any errors.
called Citibank and they credited my account with the funds.
    Took 6 weeks though.
