Vivid Wireless 4G Gateway $10 Delivered on 24-Month $89 Unlimited 4G Mobile Internet

150

Vividwireless is available in selected areas in 5 capital cities; Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

Ok I have an update from Vivid as I just called them. The older modems (from last year) use WIMAX speeds up to 6Mb/s. These new modems use LTE and can download up to 10Mb/s. The newer modems are an extra $10 compare to last years models. The old modems still work and you can buy them second-hand, just not through Vivid. I hope this answers most of your questions.

A few things have changed since this was last posted, they also offer limited $29 10GB and $59 for 40GB. Speed is limited
to 64Kbps once data allowance has been used, so in a way it's still unlimited, just slow. A very good service for people that cannot get either ADSL or NBN.

Also if you want to pay month-to-month you can buy the modem for $199

As far as mobile broadband goes, I don’t think you can find anything in Australia that offers unlimited mobile 4G plans for $89 a month.

I live in Perth, far from the exchange so ADSL is not possible in my area and NBN is very far off. I was originally using Optus Mobile broadband, but it was too expensive. About a year ago I stumbled across Vivid Wireless. I also believe this company is owned by Optus. So far it has been a breath of fresh air and no hassles with reception or staying connected (even though the coverage map showed my address as 'not having reception'). The gateways are designed for use with Vivid. I’m guessing the 4G sim or chip is locked inside the device.

Also note these are mobile 4G modems (Dedicated for 2300MHz LTE Network use only) so this enables you to take them away with you for work or holidays within Australia. All you need is 4G Vivid coverage and a power point.

The gateway has 2 internal antenna's and 4 x LAN ports.

They offer other plans as mentioned above if you do not require unlimited internet or wish to go prepaid (month-by-month).

You can also collect the device from most (if not all) Harvey Norman stores: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/how-to-buy/find-store

All plans: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/plans/wireless-broadband-pla…
Coverage map: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/how-to-buy/locations

If you’re interested and you too live in an area where you live too far away from the exchange or ADSL is not offered. I highly recommend this company and this plan in regards to value.

They also offer a 14 days money back guarantee: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/policies/moneyback-guarantee…

PLEASE NOTE:

If you can already get normal ADSL or NBN where you are then you do not need 4G mobile broadband from Vivid or anyone else.

We can both get a free month by using my referral code when you activate your device. Code is 30379. Enter this when you have received your device and are activating your account, then we’ll both get a 1 month free data credit.

Where i am, Telstra ADSL2 (the only ADSL available) gets me 5mb/s. Optus 4G from my phone regularly goes over 8mb/s. So a deal like this is quite attractive.

    • Well for me it's my only option unless I pay huge mobile fee's with other 3G and 4G companies.

  • What is the speed like and is it truly unlimited on the $89 plan? Considering this if the speed is above 50/50.

    • I stream HD movies online and watch youtube without an issue. It may depend on your area. Probably best to ask Vivid for the exact speed in your area.

      • May I know what is your speedtest.net speed like in your area?

      • Yes, truly unlimited. I've never been cut back since I've been with tham. Lots of downloads and streaming. I'm sure they have a fair use policy like all the other companies but I've never had any issues.

        • Can you please post your speedtest.net result?

        • @wildstone: Keeping in mind that I live about 20 meters below everyone else in the area in a deep hollow and I cannot use any mobile service reliably here. My speed with http://www.speedtest.net/ was 2.57 Mbps but I'm sure this will change depending on your area, reception and time of day.

    • I thought they shape you to 10/10 permanently since they moved to LTE from WiMAX.

      • They limit it to 10mb down 1mb up. Decent, but could be better.

        • 1mb up is too slow nowadays. Just like my ADSL2+

  • +1

I'm curious how fast the speeds would be going thru the wireless 4g network.

My ADSL is far from the exchange and has been hammered by the Netflix phenomenon and clogging up bandwidth. If I go thru the 4g netowrk instead that would be faster right?

    • My ADSL is far from the exchange and has been hammered by the Netflix phenomenon and clogging up bandwidth.

Same here…4pm til midnight is utterly abysmal.

Quite frequently if I need something done quickly I'll tether the laptop to my 4g phone, it smashes the ADSL2+ for speed. :'(

  • +1

I'm also quite interested. My $70/month unlimited tpg adsl in Rhodes, NSW is horrendous. I end up smashing my phones 4g as I can't deal with the buffering I have to go through to watch Netflix. Anyone got any feedback on this service?

    • My friend just joined tpg fibre in that same area, have you checked with them recently?

      • Theres some localised rollout in some of the newer buildings. Will be a little while in my place apparently. Thanks for the heads up though

  • voda $1.5/GB is true 4G, not a flaky wimax thing, prices are down too.. .

    • its not winmax, there are only 4g lte modems available. I assume the winmax modem has been retired in preference for 4g lte

    • -1

assume heavily butchered in that is correct, with a locked down SIM.
      edit;
      blergh- UL 1Mb/s>< !

  • Old deal is reverted to it's previous state and expired, it appears there is now a different offer.

OP please do not enter your referral code in the coupon box or anywhere in the deal apart from the bottom. Guidelines

If others wish you can also start a Vivid Wireless referral wiki and add yours codes in there. Referral wiki. If you don't know how to create a wiki but want to, let me know and I'll create it (won't bother creating it now in case there is no interest).

    Thanks

      Thanks hamza23. I will do

      Thanks

  • From terms/aup

"If, in our opinion, your use is so heavy at any time that it will adversely affect the quality of the service received by other customers, we may de-prioritise your access to the network. You will be notified if you breach the AUP.

Peer to peer file sharing falls into this category. You should be aware that we de-prioritise peer to peer traffic so that it does not adversely affect interactive traffic, such as phone and general browsing services. We recommend that if you are using the network for lawful peer-to-peer activity you schedule downloading to outside peak usage hours, for example midnight to 5am WST. "

Based on whirlpool the max speed is 10/1… I think this needs to be in title or description because i think it is not clear enough and 4g gives a perception that it is way faster. In fact, can anyone point me to vivid website where it says max speed is 10/1? Can't find it in critical summary page.

  • +1

Has someone got a link to the tech specs of the modem that comes with the service?

  • I used Vivid a few years ago and would only suggest them if there are no other options. I used them for about 6 months+ as my father-in-law wouldn't upgrade his ADSL plan even though we were willing to pay the difference (sorry, rant over).

Worked fine for general use but if you need to download large files it may lag depending on your area. Check the Optus site for coverage levels in your area as it won't be any different to that (well that was the case when I used it in 2013)

  • -1

I wonder if they're using Optus' 2300 TDD LTE, considering WiMAX is easier to convert to TDD than LDD…

    • +1

They don't say it explicitly, but highly doubt Optus would let their subsidiary build another LTE network, so it's just another brand for the Optus LTE network.

  • I think the word "mobile" should be removed from the title, as this isn't a "mobile" solution. It's the same solution as the Optus one. There's no "mobile" modem, there's just the one desktop modem.

    • This system uses the Optus 4G 2300MHz LTE mobile network. It does not use optic fiber, satellite, microwave or wired landlines.

      • A "mobile" solution, means you can move around with it. This isn't such a solution. Sure it uses the Optus LTE network, but one cannot conveniently carry the modem around and use it anywhere, like a mobile phone.

Vivid Wireless used to offer a "mobile" modem called the ViViFi, google that and you will understand what a mobile solution is.

        • +1

You are the only one that is calling this a "Mobile Solution". The description states "Unlimited 4G Mobile Internet". Because it's unlimited, it uses the 4G mobile network and it's internet data… If you read the description you will see that I state "Also note these are mobile 4G modems (Dedicated for 2300MHz LTE Network use only) so this enables you to take them away with you for work or holidays within Australia. All you need is 4G Vivid coverage and a power point."

          @IG88: OK. You win. :)

        • @scroogle: All good brother

  • Weren't Vividwireless cheaper and also 12 month contract only a month or so ago? Or am I confused.

    • They now have a newer LTE system. Downloads are faster. You can still buy the old modems secondhand and Vivid will let you use them but they do not provide the older Wimax Modems at the slower speeds (like I have) anymore.

      • Ahhh i see, i recall it was $69 p/month with the wireless wireless looking modem.
I signed up as coverage was just on the fringe of their maps for me but it didn't work.
When I check my address now it says I'm covered but I've locked myself in with Optus now ehhh.

        • Bugger… Did you take advantage of their 14 days money back?

        • @IG88:
I don't even know they had one. I ended up sending it back and they terminated the contract (after 5 weeks of waiting for a return bag and random calls from DHL asking why I didn't send it back when I never got a bag in the first place).

I did just notice their odd ETC for cancelling a contract:

Early Termination fees (ETF) – applicable to 24 month contract plans only
Early termination fees will be calculated as follows:
(Modem costs / [24 months]) * [months remaining] = ETF
Example: The maximum ETF for a home gateway (RRP $199) on a 24 month fixed term plan finishing 1 week into the plan is: ($199 / 24) * 23 = $190.71

Why would anyone sign up for a non-contract $199 upfront for the modem? Strange how they work this out.

        • @IG88:

You seem quite familiar with vivid although you are not a rep. Can you please point me to their website where it says max speed of 10/1? I cannot seem to find it.

        • @wildstone: I just got off the phone to them. I asked what's the difference between this years modems and lasts. That's what the rep told me. I'm not sure if it states any speeds on the vivid website.

        • @lahiruwan:

Don't know how they can get away with it if the forum is the only place where they state the speed limit. The terms and conditions and AUP do not mention anything about throttled speed limit.

Whats the new wireless modem compared to the old one?
I currently have the old one with external antennas on the roof pointing to the nearest vivid tower.
Just did a speedtest and got 2.30Mbps down and 1.47Mbps up.

PS if anyone is thinking about signing up, expect zero support from Vivid.

    • Up to 10Mb/s and another $10 compared to the older modems. Which hack did you do? I've been meaning to do the antenna hack for ages now.

      • It was basically something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvZne_E5yNU
But I put on yagi antennas instead.

The problem is, the map of the vivid towers has gone off line and Vivid wont give you an exact location so you can point the antennas at them.
Well, they wouldn't give the information to me anyway.

With the basic unit without the antennas, I got about 2-3 down. I added the antennas and got 9. But the speed goes up and down a lot depending on the time of day.

        • Coverage map is right here mate: http://maps.vividwireless.com.au/vivid/coveragemap?region=sy…
Thanks for the advice, I'll look into the antenna upgrade this weekend.

        • @IG88: Thats a coverage map, not a tower map…

        • @irishjoe: Ah sorry my mistake. Wow they had a tower map at some point. That would of been handy

        • +1

@IG88: Its used to be here: http://maps.spench.net/rf/
But the guy took the page offline.
You could get a long and Lat for the nearest point to work out a bearing from your house to get an exact line to the tower.

The best I could get out of vivid was there is a tower in the suburb beside me. That was a range of 170 degrees.

        • @IG88:

I think this map is very old. It said my area is not cover but the check coverage on the main page said I"Awesome! You are in Coverage"

        • @superforever: The map is for WiMAX I think. The main page is for the new LTE network.

        • @lahiruwan: Yup, I think you're right

        • @irishjoe:

If you know what network they use this will help you:

This is a link to the same antennas I put on my old vivid box.

  • +2

For coverage go to OzTowers and look at the Optus 2300MHz towers. Vivid is the same network as Optus.

The Optus LTE home wireless broadband is limited to max of 60GB for $80. The Vivid Wireless plan says 'unlimited' for $90. Worth a try!

Those with marginal coverage could try the externally connected antennae.

This is all too good to be true. I bet within a few months the 'unlimited' package will be gone when their network is 'ozbargained'!

    • Excuse my ignorance but is the new hardware working on a completely different frequency?
As far as I know, the old hardware ran at 2.3-2.4 Ghz and the new one runs at 2.3Ghz.
Does that mean I could buy a new unit and reuse my existing yagi antenna?

PS. Thanks for that info on OzTowers!

      • +1

I think WiMAX also operated on the same frequency but this a LTE a different technology to WiMAX. Sorry don't know about the antenna but should be able to use it.

  • So an Ookla speed test on my TPG ADSL network just now is giving me 27ms ping, 1.45Mbps down, 0.87Mbps up
Reading the whirlpool comments its saying i should be getting 10Mbps down, 1Mbps up on this for an extra $20 a month

    I'm tempted…

Anyone else got any feedback on performance?

    • I get about 2.7 Mbps. Also with TPG. It's not their fault though. Even if I go with Optus or Telstra, the speeds will still be terrible. I'm the farthest from my exchange as can be. TPG say the speeds I am getting are in the acceptable range.

I know they're doing what they can, but the infrastructure just isn't there in my area. I'm going to try these guys. See how the reception. I've read good and bad things about speeds and reception. I guess the best thing I can do is just try.

  • If you can't get ADSL or NBN, Lightning Beoadband (if available in your area) would be better than 4G.

    https://www.lightningbroadband.com.au/residential/

Just wish I could get it. My ADSL is so sloowww, and no chance of NBN for years it seems.

  • vidwireless is not good. buy modem from gumtree and try for 1 month before locking yourself for 12 or 24 months! It is not 4G and download/upload speed is not good.

  • +2

Went and bought one thinking I could use my existing antenna with it. Short answer, no.

To start with, the device using its own antenna couldnt get reception sitting inside my house. (Rivervale in WA.)
Had to run an extension cord and put it in the middle of my back yard to get 1/5 blocks of reception.
I then connected my existing yagi antenna to it and it made no difference to the reception level.
I think the tower that its pointed to hasn't got LTE enabled on it yet.

    • Thanks for the update buddy

  • The only Vivid Wireless ones I see on Gumtree are the old type, not the newer tech.

    • As mentioned, you can still use the old type. You just can't buy them from Vivid anymore. I'd say finding the new models second hand will be hard for another 6-12 months

  • +1

Thanks for posting this deal. Got a mate to sign up (hopefully he used your referral code I gave him). Couldn't even get ADSL at his place now has 9.7 down 1.1 up. He's very happy.

  • Can I get 1 month of free data if I buy modem from goodguys (20% off ebay deal) through referral?

    • Yes, just when you activate it you add the code in the referral part.
