Bad time of year to purchase a motorcycle?

After recently selling a my Er-6n, I'm looking towards replacing it with something in or coming close to the super naked class (1L and fits a 2m bloke on top comfortably).

I'm in Queensland and only looking at bikes played in QLD for ease of transfer. I want something >2008 and would preferably have ABS (can't see a good reason not to have it).

I feel like at the moment there is a very poor choice of used bikes out there and even worse prices being asked for the ones that are.. At least compared to when I last looked.

Is there a better time to be purchasing a motorcycle..? Winter?

  • let me knw which bike u decide,, pls

  • I doubt waiting for winter would make much difference in QLD. It might in VIC or TAS.

Probably just need to short list a few models and see what comes up in the next few weeks …

Bad time of year to purchase a motorcycle?

It is advisable to not purchase between 1 January and 31 December.

    • +1 to that, but then I lost my brother in a motorcycle accident and I have a good friend who just lost his son to one.

      • It really is hard to fathom why someone would neg that. I'm sorry for your loss mate. 😞

        • yeah, you never want to take that phone call; my mother never got over it. I realise that people are responsible for their own lives but I wish they would have some thought for the people they are leaving behind. Motor Bikes have very little protection so the chance of getting seriously injured or killed is much higher than being in a car. My brother left a wife and two small boys.

        • @try2bhelpful: Was it recent?

        • @TheOneWhoKnocks: It was 1997 but I still cry when I think about the waste of his life.

        • @try2bhelpful: Don't know what to say other than life can be really shitty.

Not really a best time in QLD since riding season is all year.

    I'm 194cm/110kg and I daily commute on a MT-09. It's quite comfortable!

I can also recommend R1200GS for someone your/our size, money permitting. Those things have a surprising amount of boogy!!!

I do recommend minimizing your dealings with Team Moto as much as possible, however hard that is.

    • Yeah I agree the sales people at Teammoto would sell you their mums dentures if you wanted them. I can't imagine the culture that would have produced this.

I'm absolutely frothing on the Bmw S1000R but it's so far out of budget it's a laugh.

      • I bought a Ninja 300 new for my fiance as an engagement present with the ring and the pricks didn't do a pre-delivery inspection on it. Had odd tyre pressures and incorrect chain slack etc.

Had (a different branch) fit new tyres to my MT09 and afterwards I noticed the brake engagement seemed off compared to pre-tyre change. More lever movement required to turn on the brake light to the point I was concerned about being rear ended. I took it back and they blamed my aftermarket levers and modified them without my consent (drilled the piston hole out more so the light came on sooner). Idiots. I ended up doing some research and pulling the pads out of the calipers and shoving all the pistons back in and then it was fine. But no - it was my levers. Fools.

So yeah, sales and service I'd stay away from with them :P

S1000R does look nice. Can't fathom how much they cost though. All the BM's are super costly.

        • Holy shit drilling your bloody levers out.. They must be having a laugh!

Who do you use for maintenance instead?

Yeah all of the European bikes are bullshit expensive, but the Kawasaki z800 and z1000 aren't really wowing me and there aren't any other good jap bikes in the class..

        • Yeah… I was a little surprised.

Now I do it myself. Just gotta take it slow and do lots of reading. I'll probably find a decent independent mech when it comes time to do valve checks because I don't really trust myself to get so intricate. But anything up to that I think I'm happy to do.

          Z800 = meh.
Z1000 = meh that was beaten with an ugly stick.

You'll have the MT-10 to play with soon.

  • Ended up with a 09 Triumph Street Triple. very happy with it, but I feel it's temporary.
