Cheap flights home for ANZAC holiday

Hi,

I need some cheap flights from Sydney to Melbourne return for the Anzac weekend.

Leave - after 9pm (the later the better) Friday 22nd or early Saturday (23rd).

Return - Monday (25th) night/evening. (the later the better)

I can't seem to find any that are below $300?

This seems wrong as normal flights from Syd to Melb are like $50?!

It's a long weekend and you are booking last minute.

Maybe just take the train for $45? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/241643 But by the looks of it the Friday night train from SYD to MEL is sold out.

Alternatively, consider flying out on Saturday night, it should be much cheaper.

As another option, search for Jetstar flights from Sydney to Avalon (AVV).

SYD - AVV - SYD can be had for $245 on Expedia.com.au

      Jetstar 611 21:50 on 22 April
      Jetstar 610 20:30 on 24 April

Many people seek to travel on long weekends so the prices approach RRP. You won't get cheap flights unless you choose unpopular flight times. There are no unpopular flight times at all on Friday evening. Sunday evening is slightly better, but the best deal I could see was $229 return with only carry on.
Try using Webjet to search. It shows all available flights at the times you want.
Consider also that maybe a very early flight Monday might be possible?

Are you serious? No they aren't… Maybe if you book months and months in advance…

So just to confirm you are departing on the 22/4 and returning on the 24/4 right? You know ANZAC day is the 25/4 the Monday?

I did a search on lastminute.com.au and found a flight departing SYD at 10pm 22/4 and returning from Melbourne on the 24/4 at 8:45pm basically the latest flight.

Total cost for both is $283.47

If you have any FF points you'd be better off using those for a flight.

I also had a look at Avalon. It seems to be $20 cheaper. Not really worth it IMO.

It's also school holidays so flights are in high demand = high prices.

OP made the same post about flying SYD-MEL over the Australia Day long weekend, including the "I thought flights were $50 comment".
    LOL
    Will you never learn, OP.

Thought bubble for the day is:

Failing to plan(e) (flights) ahead is planeing to fail. lol

    • so his next post won't be till around xmas then?

  • sry change of dates to Monday cos of Aznac forgot too busy.

    Does that change anything?

      Does that change anything?

As others have said, during school holidays/public holidays, prices will be much higher than off peak periods because everyone is rushing to get home for work/school. If anything flying back on 25/4 could be even more expensive, and seats harder to find as most people will have booked ahead.

There probably will still be flights available, but prices won't be cheap.

Quick searches (last flight out 22/4, last flight out 25/4, 1 adult, no add-ons)
      Jetstar - $328
      Virgin - $440
      Tiger - $418

    • Nuh, if anything it is worse because people attending Anzac ceremonies (or taking advantage of the Public Holiday) will be traveling to their home destination after the Ceremony/March (or their short holiday away).

There is an "opportunity co$t" in delay in that the more time that elapses between now and whenever you propose to fly any remaining seats get sold at a premium.

      TL;DR?
      You snooze, you lose.

  • You can always try to buy those Amex flights.

  • thanks everyone. Got tickets for 240 return.
