I Ozcheated myself onto a $15,000 holiday should I feel bad

Long storey short there was a radio competition years ago in nsw where you had to find the hidden radio crew car in the afternoon, they gave away hints during the morning and whoever found the car won a chance to go to overseas to Europe with spending money. This went for 5 days then they drew out the winner.
I found the car legitimately the second day.
The crew invited me into the car to fill out the standby forms, I may or may not have accidentally left my iPhone into the back seat Cavity near the seatbelt during this.
Next day I used gps to track the phone, and thus the hidden vehicle I drove to the location and let my friend win and get on the standby list.
And same deal on the thursday with another friend.
Battery went flat and someone else found it on the Friday.
They drew my name out of the barrel that afternoon and i won the overseas trip.
So my other 2 friends were not really involved with the winning
Should I feel bad? Btw Europe was great!!

    Bloody brilliant!!

You effectively traded in a piece of s**t for a $15,000 holiday. So what are you complaining about?

    • +1

What? Are you talking about his phone? I assume he got it back, right OP?

  • +14

The most surprising part of this story: people are still listening to commercial radio.

Oh, well done on the competition though.

Your "cheating" had zero impact of your win.

You won fair and square. Had one of your friends won, that's a different story.

The real question is, did you get your phone back?

    • No the real question is how has OP been feeling already since it was "years ago"

  • +23

I feel like you're just bragging and don't want an answer. Who cares what people think, you got a free holiday.

  • Did you take one of the friends?

    • +4

      Yes

  • did you recover your iPhone?
    surprise if you didn't.
    1+1=3

    • No I was to scared they might work it out. Cut my losses. Thought about it if I didn't win

      • They probably worked it out later anyway and you might be banned for life. lol.

Otherwise, the car went to get cleaned and the cleaning company owns your phone now.

  • Do you live Vegemite?

    • +4

It'd be weird to live in Vegemite… Why do you ask?

      • my bad, Vegemite - do you like it?

Is this a guilty confession or just a humble brag? I can't decide.

Anyway, how's your karma been since?

  • +7

I think your half bragging and half feeling guilty.

You and your mates were involved in a conspiracy to defraud with you as the ringleader. You may have found the car legitimately the first time, but then you used the phone to your advantage to direct your mates to the car another two times which gave you a 60% chance of going on a $15000 overseas trip and if the phone didn't go flat it would have been an 80% chance. No doubt that there was a deal done that if their name was drawn you would be going on the trip.

Sorry can't give you applause for this one - you and your mates were cheating.

I doubt that the terms and conditions said, no gps or tracking devices can be used.. therefore not cheating?
Maybe there is a legal issue of planting a tracking device in someones car without their consent though!
Tech is part of who we are as humans now, use it to your advantage, without crossing legal boundaries.

I think he found the car legitimately the other times as well, just in a clever manner.

  • +3

If you don't take me with you then I'll dob you in.

  • Ingenius strategy!!

  • Well done - you won legitimately , but hedged your bets with forward thinking.
We've won a cruise on the Queen Victoria including flights to England before cruising the Medittereanean & flights home obviously. We go next month. This was won legimately through attending a holiday seminar. Prize value is $10000.
Somebody has to win these competitions but YOU WON'T if you don't enter.

    • Somebody has to win these competitions but YOU WON'T if you don't enter.

Unless your playing against a stacked deck, like trying to find the location of a car before someone who knows the location without using the radio broadcast clues.

  • Has it occurred to you your 2 friends (maybe frenemies by now) are OzBargain members and they are reading this right now? Ozbargain membership is RAMPANT and widespread.

    • No they are not tightasses like us

  • Read his post properly - he entered the competition correctly & won it. Afterwards he did the cheating bit to hedge his bets, but no need at the end of the day as he was a legitimate winner

  • Don't be so negative Elappa8- try entering a competition yourself, instead of degrading other people on this site who have had the foresight to enter & had the luck to win.

    • No, not being negative, I have no objections for anyone including myself to enter competitions, however I and others do expect them to be run fairly and for entrants not to manipulate the results.

I am on the side of all the people that were trying to find the car and were denied the chance of entering the final draw because someone had predetermined the result of who would find the car on two occasions.

OP says his name was drawn first and we have to take his word for that, well, the the word of someone that "may or may or may not have accidentally left" his iPhone in a crevice were it could not be seen with sound and vibration turned off and "find my iPhone" turned on and makes no attempt to recover it or notify the radio station.

Credit to him finding the car was first time, that was smart working out the clues. After that he got desperate to win by fair mean or foul.

When his name was pulled out first the best part of his luck there, was probably a sense of relief that he could claim he won legitimately and clear his conscience, though I think that ghost may have returned.
