Why is there a reporter badge? Seems counter-productive

Why do we have a badge for reporting?

Given the negative connotation of "dobbing" to the Moderators, it seems at bit odd to discourage it by identifying those who do.

I personally don't really care, I rarely report but over the years it adds up.

Badges seemed like a nice idea, but it does make me wonder if people are shying away from reporting when they need to.

Can this be revised? Please?

I think it's a way of getting newer users (who wouldn't have too many badges) to be more involved in reporting pertinent issues to the moderators.

The underlying notion would also be that these users continue to uphold the integrity of this site by reporting moderation issues after they've earned their badge.

There's nothing wrong with the report function at all, and the badge is probably created on the premise that the majority of users wouldn't be using the report function frivolously just to earn a virtual badge.

  • Never thought of it that way. Good point.

  • I thought it might be a way of the moderators saying thank you to the members for alerting them to issues with the website.

  • How much reporting do you have to do to "earn" one?

I have to agree with Natt, it's not really a badge you'd want, but then again I don't even look at badges anyway.

It's earned from submitting 25 reports. It's not always negative though. I have the badge but most of my reports would be from reporting deals as expired, duplicates or targeted.

It took me about 3 years to get mine and I wasn't trying to get it. I was just trying to make the site better for other members.

  • I best clarify. I don't care that I have the badge. But I was surprised to see it, seems an odd one. I do "get" both sides though now.

  • Maybe a name change something corny like "Eagle eyed" or "Hawkeye"

    Imma report you all

You really don't need to, you already have The Badge. Haha

      • ..

        Damn. That is genuinely awkward.

  • As others have said, negging isn't always negative. I regularly report my own deals as you can't expire your own store rep post after a set amount of time.

  • Given the negative connotation of "dobbing" to the Moderators

This is just so wrong. Proper reporting is actually helping the moderators which in turn also help OzBargain and its users, i.e. all of us. Not sure whether it's Australian or UnAustralian, but definitely UnOzBargain to think that reporting is dobbing.

Therefore, no it is not counter-productive nor will it be revised.

    • This is a neutral post. I'm curious more then judgemental.

Do you (or anyone) think that dobbing in welfare cheats or tax dodgers is "just so wrong"? Proper reporting in that case prevents governemnt waste which should benefit all us Australians.

  • Fair enough. Overthinking it seems :(

    • Nah - I didn't think it was a bad idea! Nice try at least, especially with 'Hawk Eye' or something. I'd support that. :-)
