Johannesburg - Any Recommendations for SIM Cards/Banking?

Travelling to Johannesburg and possibly Capetown at the end of the year, any SIM card recommendations (local vs. buy before going)?

Also, would the Citibank VISA card be suited for South Africa? Cheers

  • Check out Cards with no overseas transaction fees

Citibank Plus Account (Debit Card) is maybe what you are thinking of.

    • Thanks! Already have the Citibank card, it was great in Japan last year.

  • Citbank an obvious winner.

But Westpac do fee-free banking in South Africa through ABSA, which is very handy.

SIM recommendations? Had an incredibly temperamental Vodacom (biggest provider) pre-paid sim when I was last there in 2010, but I suspect that was due to a dodgy phone, not a dodgy SIM. Vodacom seem to dominate the market, so I suspect they're the best one.

I'd just get one at OR Tambo when you arrive and you'll be all set.

    • any requirements for getting one locally? like needing a local address/id etc?

      • -1

Just say that you live in District 9

          watch out for prawns.

      • If you buy one at the airport you only need to show your passport. It's more expensive but will be saving yourself a lot of hassle.

If you buy one from outside of the airport you might have trouble proving your local address. I had issues proving that I was staying at my mothers place - it was really annoying.
