The Noob Frustration on Website Creation!

Am researching to create/ design a website. Not ecommerce but rather more towards static pages with some content updates every month, and allows for user to register (forms) and do some document management i.e. upload files, review, collaborate, download, raise ticket support etc.

Problem is I emailed 5 website design companies (locally) and the prices came back varying wildly (from $450 for a basic wordpress 7-10 page to $2000 using templates to $5000 "custom"). I looked at overseas sites such as fiverr where top wordpress sellers (with thousands of positive feedback) only charges less than $1000. I am also tempted to go the overseas route and hire a good freelance developer and pay them for whatever a half or one month salary would cost but I dont know where to start.

Adding to my disadvantage and confusion, I am not tech expert and struggle to understand how the plugins for Wordpress works, or how the different programming languages can differ from wordpress, or what the process of website creation starts (which differs person to person etc), or even to write a brief that actually give consistency for quotation to be more accurate (which doesnt help when I think I know what I want but struggle to use the right terminology).

Any good suggestions on first step?

Thanks

  • Sketch out exactly what you want, every page and every form field. Get someone from either Europe or Asia to build it. It should take them less than a week.

Buy a domain name and hosting. Get the designer to hook up the domain name with your hosting.

    • this is one of those things that I got confuse … so i read about wordpress as an alternative to building websites from ground up (not even sure if I'm correct), so does it matter if I need to know about how the website is built on?

      • +1

No. Just request it's built in WordPress. It's the easiest to edit for your needs

  • Most overseas freelancers will go with Wordpress and just slap your site into a template with little to no customization… I used to create sites for small to medium sized businesses using html, but these days I create custom sites using already established themes as it saves time and money for everyone involved.

If you want to be hands on then I suggest you create your own test site in Wordpress first to get an understanding of how it all works. I also think you'd be better of talking to a local freelance designer who can back up their work with a good portfolio.

I disagree with Dozingquinn with hiring an overseas freelancer for the aforementioned reason, but it's a good idea to sketch out exactly what you want and go over it with your designer when you are ready.

    • so one common issue i face about wireframing the site out is … how does one know if a particular action i want to achieve can be done with a wordpress plugin? I am using visio to do a topline wireframe of what i want to achieve, hoping the designer/ developer can figure out the rest i.e. how to integrate the functions together. as i go along with visio, i realised i need answers to (for example) what does mailchimp function as, how does form builder help for registration and data capture, am i able to use onedrive for document management etc … am I missing out on some other things or does one of these plugins achieve the objective …

local or international … does it matter as most likely correspondence/ collaboration will be either through skype, emails? i'm all for supporting locals but when i tried to solicit local companies, goodness the cost spiked to thousands using what u termed as templates. talk about supporting local companies, thats another argument all together.

any good local website similar to fiverr for good freelancers?

  • I'll build a WordPress site for you at an excellent price with everything broken down. I'll also explain everything to you so you know exactly what you're getting, and I'll also train you on how to use it if you'd like. :)

    PM me if you're interested.

    • You sound like my knight in shiny armour =)
