God I hate the modern game industry.

Completely depends on how it's implemented. If it's purely cosmetic for example, then I'm all for it as a good way to lower the base price of the game while scoring some extra income for the devs. Also I don't mind if you can basically buy "cheats" that grant XP/features/level access etc as long as it doesn't affect the base level game play - some people don't have the time to dedicate 100 hrs to unlocking everything in a casual game. The problem comes when the base game becomes grinding for resources to the point where it's not fun any more.

      • Also I don't mind if you can basically buy "cheats" that grant XP/features/level access

Maybe I'm old, but cheats shouldn't be charged for.

Game economics has changed. Developers who offer their games at various price points (ad supported, free with IAP, full up front paid) are finding that the free options are more successful. As long as they offer a way to pay to disable ads/spyware I'm okay with it.

        • @3:

          It depends on the game.

Right now I am playing Clash Royale and it is perfectly good to play without spending any money.

          Game economics has changed.

I'm well aware that catering to casual mums/dad and little kids is bigger business. I just don't like it.

offer their games at various price points (ad supported, free with IAP, full up front paid)

That's the problem, they don't. If developers released a free version and a paid version (that was actually complete, zero IAPs), I would be happy. But of course there isn't, because too many idiots spend hundreds of dollars buying gems on Clash of Clans et al.

        • @BuyoTheCat:

          How good is it? Fun!

        • @BuyoTheCat:
Agree with you. But it is hard to have enough money to upgrade. I have 6 units waiting for upgrade, and I am really tempted to buy coins.

The engine who finds opponents for battle is really well made. So many battle ends in a draw now.

to get you to spend real money, is allow you to get 1 epic card, but you never get the second one, so that you could upgrade. Then they put the one you need in the list of cards you could buy with coins, but you dont have enough coins. So with real money you buy coins to upgrade units waiting to be upgraded, or you buy the missing card for upgrade your Epic.

But the game is still playable without spending any money. ( Not like Tank Wars )

A barrel of gem goes a long way.
discounted itune cards or credits are the best.

I did spend some money. I figured, they did a really good job so why not pay a little. Once you need to go pass level 6, that is when you really need to spend money.

I am teaching a friend how to play and she got to area 6 without needing to spend money. The secret technique is: use only troops who look happy (smiley face).

Buy gems, to upgrade, to collect more gems. These games really should be treated like pokies.

        • @PainToad:

I have been playing it for over 2 months and I spend $14.99 on gems. using telstra credits.

I MIGHT buy more in a few months. If so, $30 for 6 months of play is pretty reasonable.

      • for $48.26 I expect some hot asian chick to sit on my lap and play the game for me.

    • Why? Do you just expect everything for free these days?

      • Just these days?

      • Only issue is that player skill level of these mobile games are based on how big is your bank balance these days.
Amount of money people wasting on games like mobile strike and game of war is crazy!

        • Does that apply to this game also or just other games?

        You're head.

I'm happy to pay for games! But I want to pay a once of fee and have the complete game! No IAPs, no DLC, no BS.

I'd happily pay $40 for a mobile game that was 3DS quality.

Instead mobile games are 99% pointless grinds, catering for middle aged people and tweens.

The world revolved around you when you were a child, now that you're an adult welcome to the reality that game developers are not working just for you because of how special you are.

        • @Diji1:

Calm down champ. As I said, I'm well aware of their logic and how insignificant 'traditional' gamers have become.

        • @PainToad:

Surely traditional gamers aren't playing on their mobile device and now they are adults can afford a gaming rig, or XBOne or PS3/4?

        • +1

You're complaining about what's included in a game that costs 20c, honestly?

Clearly you are too much of a serious gamer, perhaps stick to PC/consoles if these games aren't good enough for you.

        • I agree, I've been looking up games that are one off purchases, generally veering away from free games because everyone needs to eat, and free games are often not really free. Also, its easier to pay up front for a game on my old phone with a prepaid Telstra sim and play it on my new phone than switching sim cards for IAP :P

        • @nafe:

People carry around mobile devices cable of running Counter Strike at 60 fps (http://bgr.com/2016/04/18/counter-strike-1-6-android-port/), but they spend their time collecting gems and crushing candy.

I just feel we're wasting amazing technology.

        • @tranqme:

You're complaining about what's included in a game that costs 20c, honestly?

20 cents isn't the regular price.

Nor is it the point. There's no option to buy the complete game (at any price), free of IAPs.

        • @PainToad:

What's stopping you from playing/enjoying the game without purchasing IAPs?

        • @nafe: I dont know about other gamers but I dont. I spend too much (yet not enough!) time on my pc to want to play games on my phone…Although I had to resist on the latest 3ds deal… For anyone looking for some thing on their phone to whittle away the time, try Duolingo! Im %7 fluent in Spanish!!

        • @dsantos15:

I'm not even a hardcore gamer, but whilst I work on a PC all day, and work on a Mac on weekends, I've still got a PS3 and XBOne for playing games now and then. I played a bit on the phone, but the screen is too small (5inch), and the games just arent up to scratch (yet!)

  • Ahhh yeh. Was looking at this and holding off for some time. 20c pretty good.

  • I didn't like the game, uninstalled it after 10 minutes.

  • Sorry for the silly question but the screenshots provided didn't really tell me.

Is this a FPS? or Street Fighter type game? or Third Person?

    • Watch the trailer.

    • Third person hack and slash adventure game, a bit like legacy of Kain maybe, the mechanics probably aren't as good as recent Batman/Prince of Persia/assassins Creed/take your pick.

i need more of those google surveys, account is getting low at $17.80 left

  • Not well reviewed at all.

    I'll pass.

    • Yes, horrifically bad 4.5 rating /s

    • Keep in mind that the reviews came from people that paid US$5 for the game, so they would have higher expectations than someone who has paid $0.20.

      • I think it's more about time and space (room on device), not necessarily price. Too many good games on Android to warrant a purchase.

  • I just saw a OZbargain clan for Clash royale
