Up to $20k for a Twin Cab 4WD Ute

I'm considering upgrading my 2003 forester to a twin cab ute. If I'm going to get one, it might as well have 4wd so we can head off onto the beach or into the bush. I will use it to tow our camper trailer occasionally, although our 'family trips' car is already covered with my wife's Pathfinder, a ute would be for boys weekends. A tow bar will be the only required accessory, and I don't mind fitting one.

Must have ABS and air bags, otherwise I'd probably get one much cheaper.

Hilux seems to be the go-to for utes, but they also appear to have a price premium. What about Navara's, Ranger, Triton in the price range, or others? Anything to look out for? Any to avoid.

  • In that price range you're likely looking at the old shape Colorado (I would guess), the pre-2012 one. In that one it basically is the D-Max ;) Just FYI :)

    • I drove the old shape colorado automatic at work. Hated it. We have current colorados here to and the early ones seem to have had some issues which steer me away from holden. Put it in the list to see what other opinions were out there though.

Hilux seems to be the go-to for utes, but they also appear to have a price premium.

They are a decent truck, but they are highly overrated & thus overpriced IME. Toyota has been coasting on it's reputation for years now, many of their models haven't seen an actual upgrade in over two decades.

Now, don't let that dissuade you from buying one if you really want, but it's just noteworthy that there's nothing at all wrong with any of your other alternatives…and frankly, you will get a much higher equipment level (and most likely newer model with fewer kms) from them at the same price point as the equivalent Toyota.

  • Just bought a 2010 Ranger supercab a few weeks ago. Was $22000 with 120000km on it. Came with heaps of extras, an ex-energex car with a full Ford logbook history. From my time searching, the dual cab version is around 2-3000 cheaper. Its a brilliant vehicle so far. 3 litre turbo diesel, heaps of power but still nice to drive. Looked at hilux as well, but for more money, and less extras, just couldn't see the point.

    • Would be nice, but I'm hoping to get change from my $20k. I dont think the current shape rangers are into the price bucket yet.

  • Opinions on D40 Navara? There's something appealing about having one parked next to the Pathfinder.

'Hi'? 'Thanks in advance'? 'Any advice is appreciated'? Just sayin', common courtesy would be appropriate given you're asking advice.

Anyway, I'd recommend the Ranger. The new iterations have been well received, for example here. Few of my mates have Rangers and they're pretty happy with it.
As mentioned above the Hilux is quite overrated and the other alternatives are just as good, it just comes down to what appeals to you more in terms of appearance and features.

Apologies, didn't mean to sound rude and didn't realise I'd left out the courtesy.
