"Free Postage" but Not to Perth

I've been looking at the microlab speakers on ebay, and a few sellers offer free postage.
Every single one I've contacted has said that free postage doesn't include Perth (CBD).
There's no exclusions in any of their info on the ebay page.

Is this legit? How can they say free postage, but not provide free postage.

$191.90 Shipped from here if it helps

Oh, and all 4 of the sellers are in the same city (Sydney), all using the same pics, 2 have the same eBay store name…

I'd be betting that all 4 listings are the same store, so really it's just 1 store misrepresenting their shipping. And if they're prepared to run 4 different eBay stores, I wouldn't deal with them :)

They are providing free postage, just not to Perth.

    • I've sent them a message asking for the locations they do provide free postage to.
Still waiting on a reply, and I'll be surprised if they bother.

      • Does it matter?

Many store charge extra for postage depending on location.

        • +1

then there should be a disclaimer on the "Free Postage"

        • +1

          @moore22:

          Yes there should be.

What made you decide to ask about postage instead of just buying it?

        • That is incorrect. It's fine to say "free postage" in the picture and not offer free postage to WA.
However, if a buyer from WA purchases the item, and ebay charges him nothing for postage, then the seller has the responsibility to absorb the postage cost.

Note: I agree that "Many store charge extra for postage depending on location", but if you list an item and it says FREE postage to WA, the seller can't change his mind and decide to charge for postage.

Agreed. I dunno why the OP just didn't buy it. It says free postage, why would you ask how much it is?

@ozhunter: I am wondering the same thing too.
I would have just purchased the item, and if postage is under, just filed a paypal dispute.

        • @ozhunter: I did buy, and then I couldn't pay through ebay/paypal.
I received an email saying the price was different to what I had committed to pay, and they sent me an amended ebay receipt that I didn't agree to.
I've emailed them and told them that I don't agree to the new total, and asked them a couple of times to cancel the purchase.
It's still sitting in my ebay cart with reminders that I need to pay for it.

          Report it to eBay

@moore22: It's really weird that you made a post about an item, and then say, "oh btw, that wasn't what I purchased".

I have a stinging suspicion that, in this case, you are not being absolutely truthful in what you have mentioned so far. It is quite clear that in the image you just posted that there IS a postage charge for the item, even if it was not posted to WA.

I am inclined to believe that you screwed up in this case, and it is actually your fault, and not the seller's.

          @bsmksg:
Ok, you want the full blown story.
          1. Saw the price on the SOLO7C, saw the free postage. Liked it. Hit the Purchase now.
          2. Can't pay for it (won't allow me to put in my details for where to post). Send seller a message saying I can't pay for the item.
          3. Get an amended invoice. Postage is over half the cost of the item. Refuse that. Send seller message saying so.
          4. Keep looking for speakers, but the 7Cs are only available from that seller. Notice that the 8Cs from various sellers are also advertised as free postage.
          5. Start sending sellers messages asking if 'free postage' includes Perth CBD. They are all replying 'no it's x' (all around the same, about 70, and all with a note saying 'very bulky item')
          6. I think 'this is a bit sketchy', post on OzBargain for opinions.

          Geesus, @bsmksg: so suspicious.

        • +1

@moore22: If you can't pay for an item, it means that the item's postage cost is not finalised. Go back to the original listing, and see what it says under "postage".
As far as I am concerned, no where in the listing suggest that postage is free.

(Can you kindly screenshot the item's page. It would bring clarity as to who is responsible for this mess.)

Just FYI. I sort of know what exactly happened, and honestly there is no point complaining to eBay.
This is what I think happened (and it happens quite often):
          1) On the "Search" page, it states that the item has "FREE POSTAGE".
          2) You clicked through and purchased the item.
          3) You couldn't pay because ebay tells you "the total is not finalised".

If the above is correct, then what actually has happened is that: it is ebay, and not the seller, that has lied to you.
(What happens is: When a seller list the cost of postage as "variable", ebay somehow displays "FREE POSTAGE", when in reality, postage was NEVER free.)

Go back to the original listing, and look at what is says under "Postage". I am pretty sure it does not say free, but instead it shows "Calculate" or "Read item description" or something similar.

        • @bsmksg:
Tell me what the link below says in postage and what happens when you click through for the postage details:

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microlab-SOLO8C-Floor-Stereo-Soun…

This is one of the sellers I contacted regarding postage.

          edit: spelling

        • @moore22: It may just be me, but I am quite confused.

So, your issue is with the 8C, and not the 7C. Am i correct?

Also, you did purchase the 8C, it stated free postage, but you could not pay. Is this correct as well?

        • @bsmksg:
My issue is not with any of the speakers. That is a separate issue. Forget the speakers. Forget any product.
My issue is that a seller is promoting free shipping (with no exclusions), but not providing free shipping.

I contacted a few of the sellers (using the 8Cs as an example, as the 7Cs aren't listed anymore), asking if Free Shipping included postage to Perth.
To which they have all replied "No, its $x as the item is quite bulky".

That to me me is false advertising.

The following is from the same seller I linked you to above. Remember, forget the product. Focus on the free shipping.

I hope you're not confused anymore

          @moore22:

I contacted a few of the sellers

Side note, as I pointed out earlier, I do hope you realise that all 4 sellers are effectively the same seller, same store! Different user names

        • @moore22: I just read your long description of what exactly happened and now know exactly what you mean.

With regards to the 7C, it is likely the the item does not say free postage, which is why you could not pay. (It might have said free postage on the "search" page, but as mentioned in my other comment, the postage is not actually free.

With regards to the 8C, as mentioned by others, you should have just purchased the item. You would have been able to pay for it. You would not have faced the payment issue you mentioned above. The seller would not have sent you an invoice of a different amount.

The issue you faced with the 7C and 8C are different.

In the case of the 7C, it is your fault for not reading the listing.

In the case of the 8C, I have no idea why you asked the seller about postage. You should have just purchased it. The seller can't ask you to pay MORE for that purchase.

        • @Spackbace:
Yeah got that. Again, thanks for link in the first reply

        • +1

          @bsmksg:
          No.
          You're incorrect.
I asked the seller about postage on the 8C because the 7C listing had the 'free postage', just as the 8C does.
          Once bitten etc…

I'm not sure why you're being so tenacious about this.

The cancellation of the order has gone through now by the way, I'm sure you're thrilled to know.

        • @moore22: It's interesting that you say that.
If your issue is with the 7C's transaction, then why don't you post a screenshot of the 7C's listing?

Why do you instead post a screenshot of the 8C's listing?

Just post a screenshot of the listing of the 7C you purchased.

The fact the you refuse, or choose not to, do a screenshot of your 7C's purchase shows that there is something you are trying to hide.

        • @bsmksg:
          Geesus.
The seller isn't listing the 7Cs anymore. It's finished.

Again, stop focusing on the product.
My issue isn't with the transaction.
It's with the free postage being offered, but not honored.

          You're a stange cat, @bsmksg:

          http://imgur.com/gycfEAN

        • @moore22: You seriously are one strange person. I don't understand why the fact that:

seller isn't listing the 7Cs anymore. It's finished.

has any relevance to you not being able to post a screenshot. All you have to do is click the item in your "purchase history" and you can see the listing.

Honestly, it sounds like you just want to blame the seller for your own mistake.

Reason: It is physically impossible for the seller to charge you more than the agreed listed price. Ebay does not allow that.

        • @bsmksg:
It seems that whatever evidence I give you, you're not happy.
I understand the you feel the need to win this little interaction we're having, but I think in doing so you're missing my point.

I'll try once more before letting it go.

          Stop focusing on the product.
My issue isn't with the transaction.

@moore22: And once again… You refuse to post the 7C listing, and instead decide to post the 8C listing, even though your postage issue has to do with you being charged extra for the 7C. Thanks for proving my point.

I am not trying to win. All I want to see is a screenshot of the 7C's listing as it will clarify your postage issue. I honestly don't care as to who is right or wrong.

Honestly, I don't understand why you refuse to post the 7C listing. Seem completely at odds to your claim that it's the seller's fault.

  • closed many a website when

    free postage*

    *capital cities only

  • So you bought this deal, and it doesn't look to have any shipping mentioned on there

    • +3

Exactly. I think what has happened was that, on the "Search" page, the item is displayed as "FREE POSTAGE", when in reality, postage wasn't free.

For example: Click this link, http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=so…

You will notice that the FIRST item says free postage, but when you click through, postage isn't free.
(It is basically an ebay error, and no fault of the seller, which is why there is no point in reporting the seller.)

      • Yeah i think this what happened too

        • That wasn't the issue. If you bothered reading my entire exchange with the OP (see above), then you will not only be utterly confused as to what the issues are, but also the many loopholes in the OP's story.

        • @bsmksg: Nope didnt bother

    • Same seller, different listing.
There was two listings of the same speakers, one that had 'Free Postage' and the one you've linked to.

      • edit: Thanks for that listing up the top to the 8Cs

      • What's the link to the other listing?

  • repeated comment

  • Unfortunately not an uncommon occurence.
