Wanted: Compact Camera for 4 year old

Hi,

My niece loves using cameras, so I wanted to get one for her birthday. Just a compact point and shoot - but not some toy Frozen/Disney thing. What would you recommend for around $100?

Something from Officeworks would be ideal.

Cheers

For my 3 kids I bought used fixed lens cameras from ebay.

it's not about how shiny it is. it's about the camera. and having a camera. and using a camera. and a 4 year old will drop it. don't spend $100.

check out this fujifilm camera on ebay currently $10 with $15 postage.

We got a couple of variations on the "flip" camcorders. They take video and stills and are simple and durable.
    One was this from Philips:

We got a Toshiba one too, but it died very quickly.
The kids used them to make stop-frame animations too.

  • Another cool trick is to consider those sports action cameras. Eg. $20 Target Vivitar DVR 782 HD.
Target and Kmart sometimes run clearance specials, ~$20 to $30 for 720p. The Kmart and Target action camera's ALL have a photo mode (usually about 5 Megapixel) but you should NEVER trust the video as they are buggy and unreliable.

The positives for the cheapo action camera's are they take a beating and suitable for small hands. The down side is the LCD screens are very low resolution.

For children who are older and can operate Android/iOS I noticed many friends give their kids old camera phones. Ask friends and relatives if they have OLD candy bar or smart phones they don't use. Unfortunately, most phone batteries die within a year if they've been left uncharged.

    • For children who are older and can operate Android/iOS…

It's scary how fast they learn these systems unaided…True story: Our 2yo can grab any of our phones/tablets, fire up Netflix, navigate to the chosen kid's show (thankfully that's all we ever watch), start it playing & then cast it to the Chromecast…all independently, and all without ever having formally been shown how, merely learned by observation!

I noticed many friends give their kids old camera phones.

This would also be great, except the same little smarty pants' can still learn to fire up the dialers & call 000, even without a SIM…if only there was a way to COMPLETELY disable the dialing systems! :/

  • Hello all,

Any current bargains along these lines? Need on for my son's birthday next month. Thanks :-)
