50% off NSW Driver's Licence Renewal for Safe Drivers

1991

Was renewing my NSW licence and I was prepared to pay full price when the attendant told me I was eligible for 50% off! Sweet! Saved $162 for a 10 year licence.

Fair go for safe drivers - discounted licence renewal

If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for a 50% discount on your licence renewal fee. You must renew your licence within six months of the expiry date. If you renew more than six months after expiry, you must pay the full renewal fee. If you’re eligible, the discount applies whether you renew your unrestricted licence for one, three, five (or ten years for eligible customers aged 21 to 44 years).

To qualify, at the time of renewal you must:

  • Hold an unrestricted NSW licence of any class which expires on or after 1 July 2012. Interstate and overseas licences are not counted. Learner and provisional P1 and P2 licences are also not counted
  • Have held the NSW licence continuously for five years. This means you must have less than six months total break (eg if your licence was expired, suspended, cancelled or refused for any reason, except on medical grounds)

( Have no relevant offences recorded on your NSW licence in the five years leading up to the date you renew your licence. Interstate and overseas driving records are not counted. Relevant offences include:
** Any offence which attracts demerit points
** A conviction for a major offence, such as drink or drug driving
** Any unlicensed driving offence.
Some offences are recorded on your traffic record, but won't be counted when determining eligibility for the discount. These include offences dealt with by way of a caution issued by the State Debt Recovery Office, or any offence which was dismissed without conviction under Section 10 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999.

Important: Offences dealt with under Section 10 before 31 January 2011 are counted as relevant offences, because they attracted demerit points at the time.

If you’re appealing an offence when you renew your licence, the discount does not apply. However if your appeal is successful, you may be eligible for a refund of 50% of the renewal fee you paid.

Have I got this wrong?…how can this be a "deal", when the discount is applied "automatically", for drivers with a clean record, who renew for any period????….as I did and got the discount, 2 years ago!

    • Ikr, i think the mods have double standards. I remember years ago, i posted that i found demineralised water at half price SCA was selling, but that was the standard price at that particular store, no deal, moved to forum.

  • I'm a mature safe driver, never been in an accident, can't remember the last time anyone honked at me (if ever), I'm very courteous, yet I'm facing court for "speeding" on a HIGHWAY with no intersections or obstructions. Just as an FYI the speed limit was <2xhuman RUNNING speed, and my vehicle can do nearly 2x that in 1st.
Yeah I know speeding kills, well at least that's what stupid people say, and stupidity maims and kills many more.

My wife's driving scares the crap out of me, and she can't even drive at night or park the car, yet she qualifies for this deal. Oh and I stopped letting her use my car bcos it came back twice with dents. She has her own with missing hub caps and a broken mirror.

    Rant over, no bargain.

Yeah I'm hearing you brother…that's why I stated "with clean record"….not "safe driver".

I was stopped by the police some time ago for exceeding speed limit by 10 kms over an 80 limit….but where I was stopped was less than 200 metres from my take-off point, where I had stopped at a roadside diner!!

Now, I was driving a V6, but…maaaate, I took off gently up an incline and around a curve before they stopped me (don't forget they are supposed to back off the radar to cover anomalies with electronics).

So I lawyered up and fought it!….the copper never turned up at court and I won….cost me more than the fine, but no points!

  • I don't know how this can be consider a promo/deal because when you receive a letter to renew the licence, it's always written there you could get 50%. Also the staff will give you 50% if you are qualified even though you are not aware of it.

    this isnt a bargain dude

  • This is a shitty process with RMS - you can only get this 50% on the day your licenses expires (assuming you may get infringements right to the last day).

A better process could have been to provide this discount a couple of weeks or a month earlier with the condition to charge you in full if any infringements occur prior to the previous expiry date. Such a lot of inconvenience for someone to be available at RMS on that day your license expires.

Their accountants and billing policy makers must not be paid to think creatively.

    • No way, you can always renew your license within 6 months from expiry and get the discount.
