Advice on 2008 Toyota Kluger GSU45R KX-S AWD (214,961 Kms) $13,656

Hi Ozbargainers,

Would love your thoughts on a Used car that I'm planning to buy from Pickles Auctions.

It's a 2008 Toyota Kluger GSU45R KX-S AWD that has 214,961 Kms on it. The price (inclusive of all admin fees, RWC inspection and 3 years Pickles warranty) comes to around $13,656.

Usage would be mainly to get around within Melbourne itself and occasional 2-3 hours drives outside of Melbourne.

I would appreciate any thoughts on whether this is a good buy.
If not, do you have any suggestions on a 7-8 seater within a budget of $25k max? The brands that I am looking at are mainly Nissan, Toyota and Mazda.

Cheers,
Abby

K's are way too high, don't do it. Have you checked the service book and made sure it has dealer servicing?

    • Yes… I checked the service book today…
Last service was in December 2015…. All services were done by Toyota dealers…

Kms are high, but those Kluger engines are pretty solid. The Kluger will drink the fuel though, especially around town. For the AWD, expect fuel to be around 15L/100km.

If you're looking to go up to $25k, why not find a newer, lower mileage one?

They're good sized cars, lots of room, 1 of a few with the middle row on rails to alter the legroom of the 3rd row. Rear a/c vents are always good.

Find a newer, lower mileage one, and expect to spend money on fuel, and you'll be fine with it. Not many other 7 seaters I could recommend for that sort of dollar value. (Territory is one, again solid engines/gearboxes, plenty of room. Could possibly find a newer one than a Kluger)

  • @Spackbace: I did find a 2013 Kluger with lesser kms (80,000 kms) but it was priced close to $30k which was way out of my budget.

Territory is a great looking car but I didn't consider it because people have warned me about the high servicing costs and expensive parts if something were to go wrong…

I checked the service records for the car and I could see that servicing was done at Toyota dealerships every 10,000 kms..

Would the kms be a big factor in determining the mechanical performance / life of the car?

What makes 'people' say that? Considering they share the same mechanicals as the Falcon.

      Of course it would!

I'm quite sure there'd be more than 2 7-seater Klugers in Vic under $25k!

      Here ya go

      2012 models for $25k

'People' say that cause fords are known for the unreliability.
        A few common problems with territory's are;
        Front lower ball joints
        Front upper ball joints
        Front brake hose failure
        Front hub bearing failure
        Front lower arm inner bushings
        Front upper arm inner bushings
Front sway bar link rose joints
        Front diff bushes
        Rear upper arm inner bushes
        Rear lower arm inner bushes
        Rear diff bushes
        Rear brake hoses
        Headlight/indicator combination switches
        Instrument clusters
        Fuel tank sender units..
Please note these aren't 'one off' repairs but something I used to do at least 2 of every week at ford.
As far as my time at Toyota, Kluger common issues were steering intermediate shaft knock, I know which one I'd rather have.

I have a 2008 2WD model, 7 seats. Done about the same amount of km's. Happy with it.

We've owned it since 2009 and picked it up with about 40k km on the clock.

The "high" kms won't be an issue - the engines are solid.

    That said… current issues;
    * two issues with the air con to sort out (suspected hole in the air con and the rear AC unit requires a new controller board).
    * car steering wobbles slightly (a bit of a knocking sound) when going straight at slow speeds - easy to fix, according to the grease monkey.

I don't see the kms as too high if all servicing has been carried out. Sure it's on the higher end (above 20,000 per year), but it's a Toyota. Also if your budget is $25k you'll have plenty left for repairs and being lower value you should also save on insurance and no have as much depreciation to worry about.

Personally though I'd aim a little higher in the budget and get something with less kms
