Screen repairs of any phone are tricky. Make sure you have some decent quality tools (please don't buy the cheap crap from eBay for $8-9 dollars, they are really shonky and the screwdriver heads are crap). Visit your local Jaycar for some decent tools.

You'll also need a lot of patience. Be patient and don't force anything.

    • Thanks scrimshaw. I think it's a tricky DIY job.

    There are no good options.

The $10 eBay S5 screen repair kits include replacement glass and screwdrivers that will work once. Most people don't need the screwdrivers to reassemble their phone because it won't survive the process.

After disassembly, somehow separate the cracked glass glued to the LCD with a hardware-store heat gun / hairdryer / playing cards without damaging the LCD. Attach the replacement glass to the LCD with supplied double sided tape. You can expect the glass to peel within weeks because the adhesive is not strong enough.

If you attempt this with proper tools and UV glue, you do have some hope of repairing the screen for less than a professional.

A professional will do a good job but will cost as much as a used S5.

It is also worth considering how the screen cracked in the first place before you go ahead. I had a phone hit the road and although it looked like a simple cracked screen, the phone's antenna was bent and water got in. I spent $250 on a screen replacement, $50 on a temporary phone and had to buy a new phone anyway.

    • Thanks mullsie for the detailed explanation.
