Removing Paint Spray from Bumper

Hi

First time car owner, had a few scratches on my bumper decided to touch up paint it.
I used Dupli-Colour spray can, the colour is a bit darker than my actual bumper colour :(

How can I remove it please?

I used nail polish remover and it didn't work.

Should I get one of these

Bit afraid that this will remove the original car colour.

Please advise.

Thanks

wet and dry sandpaper. Soak it and get a spray bottle. Keep spraying and sanding. Use the finest grit you can find.

    • Thanks, is there a some sort of spray or product to remove it?

no, paint on paint - a paint removal spray product doesn't discriminate.

wet n dry and slow as you go.

when touching up scratches the beginners way is to get a small pot of the same/similar paint from SCA or autobahn(barn?) and use a small artist brush to apply it.

      • you can try paint thinner, but if its acrylic paint it wont do anything.

Even using 2000 grit wet sander paper, a beginner will still do some "damage" to the clear coat.
By "damage" I mean you will scuff it up and you will need to buff it.

I'd suggest using a cheap random orbital buffer and a suitable compound. Poorboys SSR range is good enough for removing overspray. Use SSR 1 or SSR 2.

  • Could try Water Rubbing Compound, and a lot of patience. A mildly abrasive paste specifically for cutting back paintwork. Most auto stores will sell it. The earlier its used the better.

  • That stripper product will do this… https://youtu.be/7bn5a5dbvPM?t=33

  • If it is still nice and fresh, you might get away by 'puttying' it…puttying is used to remove urban pollution and oxidation from paint work…used a lot in preparing 'show' cars to get to and refurbish OEM paint before waxing.

When I puttyed my green golf cart (polycarbonate), the green of the poly contaminated the putty and I had go buy a new bar. Also removed over spray that drifted onto the roof of my car. You can feel the difference in smoothness of the paint after puttying.

I used California GoldĀ® Clay Bar System, about $40 at Autobarn or SuperCheap. Good luck.

  • Try Kerosene, if it doesn't work then try Acetone. Never use paint stripper, it'll just eat away the plastic.

  • If the new paint if fairly fresh, you can use carby cleaner and it clean off the new paint but remember to do a test patch first so that you know it doesn't start dissolving the original paint.

  • Melamine foam which is what magic eraser is will remove overspray from black mouldings. Do not use on painted bumper though. You need a clay cloth or bar for painted bar. Or try acrylic thinners and plastic razor blade for a more gentle approach

Once again, if the touch-up paint is a week or newer, get yourself Eucalyptus oil. A small amount on a clean rag and rub the area with slight overlap.
It will remove the new, leaving the old.

If paint us fresh, use some cut&polish and rub like mad. It will only take the paint you rub off and will not affect anything else.
I have even used JIF to remove over spray before. Car ended up smelling very clean and really brightens up a white car.

Make sure to use a light coloured tag, no black or blue.

I would strongly advise against using any type of solvent mentioned above like thinners, acetone, kero etc.
