Relocating Overseas - Tips etc

I will be relocating overseas and wanted some advice about the most important things to take, to do etc…all those little things you forget until after the fact.

Thanks!

  • I have lived overseas before but only for a few months at a time. This will be permanent.-
  • I am single - no dependents and do not have a job set up.-

Start changing contact addresses on everything you get mail on to a family members address, superfund insurances banks shares any bills motor registry electoral roll ATO Previous employers any organisations you get mail from. Go to accountant and discuss your situation and set up what you need to do tax wise. Finalise all bills. Check relevant insurance needed to live in that country.
Consider and investigate what you will need to set up life in new place and collect these documents before you go and email them to yourself. Ie references, bank account setup requirements, social security taxation number setup, rental accomodation requirements, relevant health tests and immunisations. Set up a mail redirect for any mail you haven't correctly changed addresses with.
Without knowing more about you things like property etc make things a little more complicated.

    Have fun

If you have a drivers license, check the requirements to get it in your new country. If you require driving abstracts or other documentation it will be much easier to get that before you leave. Also, there could be a time limit on how long you can drive with a foreign license as a resident. You might consider not renewing your Australian license shortly before leaving if it has a multi-year expiry period because that can be used as proof of having a driving history.
