Travelling to US - Buy luxury watch here or in US

Hello,

I will be travelling to US in June. My brother is getting married and would like to gift him a watch. I have two options,
1) Buy locally from an AD and claim the GST back (I am located in Sydney)
2) Buy when in the US (and pay the FX rate)

I was wondering if there were any experts here that could advise on whether there were any significant differences in AUD (equivalent) prices? Warranty isn't an issue as I can always follow up for him.

I'm looking at IWC, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger LeCoultre and Hublot in the 15-20k range. Open to second hand (any recommendations for good dealers?)

Thanks

I don't know about prices. However, I'm sure there will more ADs and far more selection, especially in your price bracket

it always trips me out that there are ozbargainers willing to spend 15-20k on a watch.. (don't get me wrong, i love watches just trips me out)

p.s. if it was me i'd go IWC for a more timeless piece.. might just be my perception but i found the AP and JLC to suit the older crowd and found hublot to be exclusive to rappers..

I think there are so many better things you can get him with that sort of money. That is my personal opinion. If someone gifts me a $20,000 watch, I will be too worried to wear it outside my house.
No idea about your question though. Sorry.

  • Better discounts here than the US on selected brands, some are notorious for no or low discounts. If you can get 20% off RRP and take off 10% GST, you're doing all too well. You wont be able to get this much discount in the US and I will only purchase in US when AUD is in parity or close to parity (which will happen when Trump comes to power). Ideally, visit Swiss watch shops, look around for the watch that catches your eye, shortlist a few, discuss the best price they can do. Find out the authorized dealers for those watches in the state where your brother lives, being mindful of time zones, I would either email them or call them for availability of the watch and a best price with stating your impending visit to the US and the shop in June. I hope this helps. Cheers.
