Advice for Mobile Broadband in Tasmania

Hi, we have just moved house and currently have a contract with Telstra for ADSL2 broadband but they have advised that there are currently no free ports available in the exchange to connect our line to. We are on a waiting list and currently seeking alternative internet options.

I have found optus have 10GB month to month for $35 but thought it may be worth checking if anyone knows of a better deal. We are limited in Tassie to the better Mobile Broadband deals available but do get the major companies eg Telstra, Optus, Voda.

Any ideas?

PS for what its worth Telstra has been really good about this and have added additional data for both of us until we find an alternate arrangements. Would like to stick with Telstra because it is by far the most reliable service in Tasmania.

  • For Tasmania it's best to actually grab a cheap prepaid SIM first to test out the signal level. We went and drove around Tasmania last year and my Optus SIM gets almost nothing anywhere other than cities & towns on the east coast, and our Aldi Mobile SIM (Telstra 3G at the time) has much much better signal.

  • Thanks for that. I'm going to get one of the optus usbs from office works that are $9 for 2GB at the moment.

  • Vodafone have shocking 3G coverage around Tasmania and Optus are patchy. Telstra 4G is great around CBD's and 3G is pretty much everywhere else.

Check the coverage of Vodafone and Optus where you are now.

    • Yeah, I've checked all the maps and they (they being Optus, Vodaphone) say I should receive at least 3G coverage in my area. I was with Vodaphone about 6 years ago and the service was terrible so a bit hesitant to go back there again - it may have improved though. That was with an iPhone 3 too.
