Tiny Holes in T-Shirts- Always on The Same Spot

I am trying to find a solution to this problem I am currently facing and don't seem to find a reason/solution. At least 10 of my T-Shirts-Old and new, cheap and expensive have tiny holes on the front part near the jeans button. The holes just seem to appear without any warning, I mean T-Shirt would be just fine when I wore it last time without even a single hole but next time I see my T-Shirt-It will have 5-10 tiny holes at the exact same place. Couldn't find any reasonable explanation. Following are some of the factors people have highlighted in other forums but I couldn't agree with any of them.

  • Rubbing of T Shirt with kitchen bench tops- But Couple of these T-Shirts I have never worn in Kitchen.
  • Washing Machine- But it wouldn't be on the same spot always
  • Moths or Silverfish- But it wouldn't be on the same spot always
  • Thinner or shitty fabric- But there aren't enough signs of wear and tear. and why its always the same area.
  • Car belts- Not sure on this but tiny holes have started only after I bought this new car, but it doesn't make much sense.

With this post I am trying to see if someone has found a solution to this problem.

  • How tight are the T-shirts? Might going up a size avoid this?

    • various fits- tight to loose.

  • holes have started only after I bought this new car,

there's a starting point. One of the rules of fault finding, when did the fault first start to show.

    • Around 2-3 months after I bought this car but seat belt is super smooth on the side which goes through lap area.

  • Do you wear them to the gym?

    • +1

No, I don't go to gym even though i do need to join one soon.

  • do you have a bit of a belly ? my mother gets a similar thing on some of her shirts ( enough that we have all noticed it at some point )

  • tiny holes on the front part near the jeans button

Can you upload a photo of the holes?

Perhaps the holes are from the metal teeth of your fly zipper? Did the shirts ever get caught in the zip? Do they get caught between the jeans button and the very top of the zip?

Is the metal jeans button causing a chemical reaction with your fabric softener?

We're you doing some grinding in the nightclub?

Hopefully it's not some weird gases coming from your groin area.

    • sorry for the late reply, didn't get a chance to check account last night after work.

I will upload a picture tonight. Zipper and the holes aren't close to each other most of the times, its only when I am sitting. can't be from the zipper because i would notice it if its getting caught in the zipper.

not sure about the chemical reaction, but I assume fabric softeners must be tested to make sure they don't react with your cloths or metal buttons.

Weird gases- I could have considered this seriously if tiny holes were on the back of my T-Shirt. :)

  • This happens to my t-shirts too, in exactly the same spot! I'm not a jeans wearer though. I also had considered the same points above, but my conclusion was that I buy cheap, crappy t-shirts from discount department stores (as any Ozbargainer would), and the t-shirts are designed to self destruct so that we go and buy more.

    • But these holes are exactly at the same spot for all the T-Shirts.

      • For me I'd say the holes are around bench top height so this area more often gets wet when cleaning or cooking, though I do try to wear an apron to avoid ruining any more t-shirts. Still a mystery though.

  • Do you tuck your t-shirt in?

The most likely cause is friction. It could be that the t-shirt is pinched under your belly in the folds of the jeans and the friction due to constant small movements just causes the material to break.

Most of my t-shirts will eventually end up frayed around the neckline due to excessive wear from the beard (or stubble), but that usually takes months or even years. I can see how a t-shirt that is pinched against jeans could wear out in weeks or even days.

  • No, I don't tuck my T-Shirt in.

    • So far all the evidence suggests that the problem is caused by friction between the t-shirt and the pants or seatbelt and happens when you sit down. It's possible that when you sit, the zipper is exposed and the teeth on it might be abrasive enough to do the job. Or it could be that there is one tiny sharp protrusion somewhere that does the damage. It could be as innocuous as a synthetic thread with a melted end that forms a tiny hook and pulls the fabric threads. You may want to carefully examine the seatbelt for any spots that may feel prickly or rough. Perhaps as an experiment, put some kind of a cloth sleeve over the seatbelt and see if that prevent further damage to your t-shirts.

  • Is your belt buckle sharp in the corner?

  • Perhaps body hair poking through the material in the same spot - creates a hole after a while.

  • Is your belt the traditional holed belt?
I get these t shirt holes and I always put it down to the clasp type belt that has no holes in it!

  • I had the same problem, for me it was opening screw top beer lids under my t-shirt.
I have about 5 damaged tops from doing this….still do it, keep forgetting!!

  • I think the OP may find his problem is pubic lice.

I had a similar problem and that's what it ended up being although there should also be a noticeable itch.

Turns out the lice couldn't eat a hole through jeans, I don't wear underwear so I was noticing the small holes where they had worked up and eaten through my tshirt.

    • WOW! Sorry to hear your story, but I do wear underwear so in case it was due to lice, my underwear would have holes and no (Unreasonable) itching here.

  • This is easy.

Obviously the underwear gnomes are displeased with your selection of underwear and they have decided to punish you !

So, logically, buy different underwear in order to stop holes from appearing in your t-shirts.

    You are WELCOME.

  • Where do you put the pegs when you hang the clothes on the line? Is it always in the same spot, and is that spot where the holes are?

  • I have a feeling its die to where the seatbelt sits on you, tour belt buckle/jeans button/zip and movement while you drive. the seatbelt and is pushing the shirt against a metal object, and as you move slightly in the car its causing rubbing on that spot

  • Did you shave your pubes?

  • Its from the birds when you hang your clothes on the washing line.

The birds land on the clothes with there claws and make the holes as they move around.

Its in the same spot because you probably fold the clothes on the line.
