QLD CTP and Rego Refund

Hi

Last week I purchased a car from QLD and had it transported over to NSW.
i changed the plates to NSW today.
The seller had 11 months worth of CTP and Rego on it.

I want to know who gets the refund of this ?
would it be me or the seller?

I rang the "Department of Transport and Main Roads" in QLD but i got conflicting responses from 2 consultants.
(call dropped off mid-way so I had to call back)

Any input appreciated.
Thanks

  • Was the car transferred into your name before the qld rego was cancelled/transferred? If not the seller may score it by default BUT technically you bought a registered vehicle, yes? If so it is yours.

HOWEVER from our own experience, you're unlikely to get a refund on the CTP portion.

    • No I couldnt transfer the car before because i dont have a QLD license so I had to state i live in NSW and when you do that they make you go thru CTP + rego again.

      • I just found this -

        http://www.qld.gov.au/transport/registration/cancel/
"You cannot receive a refund if a Queensland registered vehicle is not recorded in Queensland in your name at the time of cancellation."

        That is so unfair.
i cannot register the vehicle in QLD because i don't have a QLD license.
And once I register the vehicle in NSW I cant claim the QLD CTP/rego?

How do i get the seller to give me the $ he gets after i get him to apply for the refund?
I have handed over the QLD plates to NSW Rta and got a receipt for it.

If i hand over the receipt to him - he will not give me the $$ he gets from the refund.

        • How do i get the seller to give me the $ he gets after i get him to apply for the refund?

Ask, nicely, and straightforwardly imply that it's an entirely expected and appropriate thing for him to be doing in the circumstance. You might get lucky.
I don't like your chances, but update the thread if it happens :)

        • Hi, it's been a few years but I'd like to know what happened after this if you don't mind sharing :)

  • I thought you were no longer required to exchange number plates when you buy a car interstate.

  • Unfortunately the QLD person will get the refund as the registration is in their name… That's why I usually buy car unregistered and put on permit unless they are willing to give you credit for the registration but good luck with that
