PC for Gaming on $650? Recommendations?

First off, is this possible?
I'd like to play games online sometimes. I don't need the settings on ultra/max but it's more for browsing/multitasking and watching streaming live video sports.

I have a 4K monitor already and I also have a wifi USB dongle which gets speeds of up to 4 mb/ps so I'm fine with that. I need something that will run the monitor at 4k res so that's obviously graphics dependent.

What should I look at for the best bang for my buck?
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'd prefer picking something up that's pre-built and ready to go on Ebay or an online store with delivery.

Would something like this below fulfill my needs or is it just crap?
Thanks and really appreciated any advice because I'm a total noob with this stuff.
If I really had to I could stretch to $700 but would love to keep it $650!

    Best GPU u can afford.
Slap it in something with an Ssd.

Have you got any used parts?
Or… mayb gumtree an old rig from someone (without gpu)

Hope you not looking to play games 4k.

First of all, let me say that you need to forget gaming at 4K with that budget. Even if you had EVERYTHING else apart from a graphics card you still couldn't afford the card(s) you'd require.

The R7 GPU they're mentioning on the specs for that eBay prebuilt is not a discrete card and does just come as part of the APU. Gaming on it will be lackluster on a 1920x1080 screen, let alone 4x that number of pixels.

The best thing I could suggest if you're set on gaming is a console. Hook it up to your '4K' screen and simply be satisfied at 1920x1080.

Gaming on PCs is not a cheap ask unfortunately.

If you're not willing to build your own, it'd be tough to get things down to that budget.

Furthermore I would be hesitant to buy a whole system online because there's so much that could be damaged during transit but if you're in the middle of nowhere I guess there's not much choice.

From what I've read PCCasegear is pretty good with delivering systems. So… something like this is what I would consider if you can stretch your budget a little further.

If you have any local pc shops nearby, your best bet would be to give them a visit. Check out this site (and change the currency to AUD) and see what parts you can buy for your budget. Look for the final budget on the right hand side and then everything on that row will be what you'd be looking to buy. Then take the list to your nearby pc shop and then ask them how much they can build the comp for. It'll most likely be roughly $100 on top of the cost for parts alone.

  • Keep checking (often!) Dell Outlet Australia, they have some ridiculous bargains sometimes (nothing as I write that): http://www.dell.com/learn/au/en/audhs1/campaigns/dell-outlet…

  • hi guys, I don't care about 4k gaming, it's more so I can fit as much on the screen as possible when running multiple apps at once.

I bought my computer in 2009 and it's got an Nvidia GTX960 or 970. It still seems to run most games at least at medium, but it's just slowed down and the hard drive is only 150gb each, ram is 8gb etc and the processor is around 2.4 ghz off the top of my head. But yeah, was thinking I could perhaps convert the gfx card to the new machine and then get a new gfx card in a year or two.

If anything, just reinstall windows on an SSD and you should be fine. Games rely on GPU mainly so if you have a 960 or 970 that should be good.

My advice is not to run mutliple apps when gaming lol

Unless you bought the graphics card in the past twelve months, it won't be either of the above models.

Without knowing your situation if you have everything for a PC now including a GTX960 then you can quite possibly just buy a new motherboard cpu and RAM and you'd be in pretty good shape game wise.

Edit: wait if you mean you bought your card in 2009 then it isnt a gtx960/970…

He might have got it confused with 9600GT, which is about when that card was introduced.

Or he might have bought his PC in 2009 and since upgraded to a gtx960 :)

There is a way of building a gaming rig for $650, but it does involve:

    1. Using some second hand parts
    2. Using some parts you already own (namely, ATX case or power supply and storage)
    3. Not paying $100 for Windows 10 (there are ways of securing Win 10 for almost free or around $25 AUD, see Reddit MSsoftwareswap)

A cheap and simple way is to just buy Refurbished DELL 990 Tower PC (i7 2600, 4GB DDR3, 250GB and Windows 7)
    http://www.budgetpc.com.au/refurbished-products-160/refurbis…

and then throw in a GTX 960 (Important: best to use Mini version with shorter PCB). Optionally upgrade the power supply (maybe an Antec Neo Eco 520w or the budget corsair VS450 if you don't mind Taiwanese capacitors)

You should be able to achieve a decent build for just under $650.

  • ok guys I have the specs of my current PC:

    It's an Intel core i7-2600k CPU @ 3.7 ghz
GPU is a GeForce GTX580 and it has 12 gb of ram

Built in 2008 with Windows 7.

    Hard drive 2 x 100gb

Anything worth salvaging for a new pc?

Are you a time traveller? Your computer is probably only 3~4 years old, meaning it is not from 2008.
2600K was launched in 2013 — this processor is nearly as powerful as a Haswell Core i5 4570 AND it's also very overclockable. It's VERY powerful given it's age.

GTX580 was launced in 2010, good in it's time but now just hot and inefficient, and is OK for 1080p gaming, but not 4k gaming.

Also you should be using Windows 10 by now! It's free to upgrade if you do it before June 30th this year.

It just needs a new HDD. Maybe grab yourself two of these SSD's from here. Install your OS on one SSD and install your games on the other.

Your graphics card is pretty old and needs updating, but to be honest, this card is just about as good as a modern $300 dollar GPU (that is to say, the GTX 960 or R9 380). To see a BIG difference, you need to be prepared to spend around $420~455 for R9 390 or GTX 970

If you upgrade to either of these GPU, 4K gaming shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Seriously though, all you need really is just the SSD's, Windows 10 update and a can of compressed air. Give it a good cleaning and reinstall Windows and it'll be superfast.

      • mate my PC is definitely not only 4 or 5 years old.
I bought it in 2009 at the latest I promise. No upgrades no nothing. Maybe the 'system information' that PCMeal put in my system properties is incorrect but I promise you it's at least 6 years old lol.
        Your advice is much appreciated.
She hums like a boeing 747 and is pretty slow/laggy so perhaps I'll just reboot everything and clean out the dust in the tower and then look into the HDD and GPU upgrades you mention.
