How to Pay a Company in Spain?

Hey Guys. I have to pay a registered sound hire company in Spain 2600 Euros for a used (rarely found in Australia, but very good quality) sound system I'm buying from him, via a Spain-based used music equipment website, to import back to Australia (via the UK, cos it seems direct freighting is around 900 Euros!, but only 200 Euros via UK). Anyway, he's made out the invoice for me from his company account, and only one option of payment - direct deposit into his account. If it was 50 bucks, I'd take the risk, but to effectively donate 2600 Euros into his account with no guarantee the stuff will ever arrive concerns me. I've Facebook searched him - he seems very honest and accurate - a genuine seller.

Is there a better way to pay money to someone overseas, that comes with a guarantee, like Paypal - can I use that, and if the stuff never arrives, claim the funds back??

Thanks very much.

    Use an Escrow service..

    • Ok, sure, but this is OzBargain - don't I have to find a service that's free? :-D

  • No disrespect, but wow, talk about first world audiophile problems… ;)

Haha! It's for my live cover band - not for my home theatre!

  • I would not do a direct deposit (or western union, or anything that cannot be reversed). It sounds like a scam. Anyone can register for a paypal account in 2016 (paypal has protection up to $20k). If he's concerned about the fees he should add them on to the price.

The Australian government has a scamwatch website, one of the flags is that the seller insists on EFT or wire transfer

I repeat, Do not do a direct deposit!

    • So do you mean if he does have a Paypal account, I can simply have him Paypal invoice me the full amount (plus I pay the Paypal fees), and if it all goes tits-up, I can just request the money back from Paypal? It doesn't have to be some sort of Ebay sale for that to happen? Cos I have a Paypal account I could send with.. does that help?

      • Yeah I think that's how it works. I've never paid someone directly through paypal though, but having a third party handle the transaction is much more secure.
