Red Light Camera Video. Expect a Fine?

Hey guys

So tonight I did something stupid. Observe.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyGXjVh6B7I

There is a red light camera here and I think I saw it flash (though I can't really tell in the video)
As you can see, the light turns red right as I reach the "stop line". I read somewhere that they give you 0.5 seconds after the lights turn red and if this is true, I should be past the line right? I'd then be okay according to this http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?document_id=40417

"What if I was already in the intersection?

A road safety red light camera is activated when a vehicle crosses the stop line and enters the intersection after the light/arrow turns red. If a vehicle is already partially or wholly over the stop line and within the intersection when the light/arrow turns red, an infringement will not be issued. All images are verified before an infringement notice is issued."

What do you think? Will I receive a fine?

No, you should be fine but you're an idiot anyway.

  • In Victoria? Then

I read somewhere that they give you 0.5 seconds after the lights turn red

is absolutely, positively false. Red light cameras throughout Victoria commence enforcement from the very split second that lights turn red.

Besides, I have played your video four times over and did not see a flash.

There are two sensors for red light cameras - one underneath the stop line, and another one beneath the pedestrian crossing perpendicular to the direction of traffic which the camera is enforcing.

In the linked video, you went over the stop line sensor at amber, but then proceeded over the pedestrian crossing sensor when the lights changed to red. That's assuming there were sensors in your path to begin with.

There are two elements in the video suggesting that you won't be getting a fine this time around:

    1. There was no discernible flash at any time in the video; and

    2. As I'm sure most people are aware, red light cameras can only enforce red light offences by photographing the offending vehicle from the rear, with the offending vehicle and the red light facing the driver all in the same photograph. There were no cameras or camera poles on either side of the road you were travelling on before turning left.

    Next time, play it safe.

    Have a nice weekend.

  • Really? damn :(

Even still, it's possible my nose was just over right as it changed?… it's hard to tell, even when I play the video at 0.25 speed.
I mean, I know I'm definitely before the pedestrian crossing when it changes… but the stop line is like dead on when it goes red.

Edit: Just saw your edited post. Yeah there's no camera on the road I'm coming from, but one on each side of the road I'm turning into.

    • +3

there's no camera on the road I'm coming from

      Case closed.

      You will not be fined.

      :)

  • It's the intersection of Francis St and Wembley Ave in Yarraville, Vic

EDIT: ha… looks like the camera's aren't even there yet in the google street view

    • yes, I was just about to say, looking at street view, I can't see any cameras, but the street view was from 2014

  • I cant see a flash and i know from experience they defiantly light up the intersection. However if you didnt get one you were darn close. Floor it harder next time.

    • Floor it harder, you say? Well then you might get three snaps.

One for a red light offence.

      One for a speeding offence.

      One for the coroner.

As long as OP isnt a P plater than hes fine!

        • So if you're not a probationary driver it's okay to floor it to beat a red light?

Hopefully you mentioned that to your driving instructor when your licence fell out of the WeetBix.
