ADSL2 Modem + Router Advice Needed

Hey Guys,

Getting TPG connected soon and am currently lacking a ADSL2 modem.

I have a pretty average d-link black trashcan shaped router (DIR-817L from memory) but no modem.

Is it worth spending $25 on something like this: http://www.msy.com.au/qld/morningside/modem-modem-router/135… and then wait for a good modem/router deal?

Or is there a good modem/router that is always a decent price?

Info: I'm just over 2.5km from the exchange, 2 bed apartment (brick walls I think) so not a massive need for powerful wifi

I would spend $5 on a second hand modem and then wait for a good modem/router deal.

Had a quick look and the cheapest is $20 in my area. So for an extra $5 I can get a new one.
Now to decide between the 8817 and 8840T, or maybe I can nab an old spare one from my work.

No NBN in my area for the next 3 years at least (not on the rollout map), but for this reason I'm leaning towards modem + standalone router.
