N40L Raid 0 failed

I have a hp proliant server which I use for downloading and storing torrents. I had 2 WD red 5tb drives set on raid 0 using the bios raid controller but something happened and the raid configuration no longer shows. Both drives seem OK but I have 6tb of data on the raid and I don't want to lose that data. Anyone have any ideas on how to recover this without wiping the drives?

I think you've experienced why people don't use RAID 0 for anything data they deem important.

    Good luck.

Maybe a reset of the bios will help.

  • Yeah Raid 0 shouldn't really be used anymore given the SSD performance, I cant see why someone would need storage performance that badly they would compromise the data itself in the process. Recommend splashing out for 1 more HDD next time and make it a Raid 5, performance + redundancy.

If the HDD are fine then it should to be the server itself, problem is you need to find another server with the same raid chipset to be able to test it. Best bet would be try source another server (or server with the same chipset), even just borrow it, plug in the HDDs and see if this server recognises the Raid. You could pay someone to recover the data for you but its super expensive and considering most of what you are recovering is most likely free/illegal I'd cut your loses if the first method is unsuccessful.

  • You could try running mdadm --examine --brief --scan --config=partitions in Linux to see if the RAID is in a format mdadm recognizes, and/or try one of the many Windows RAID recovery utilities such as: www.freeraidrecovery.com

If the controller has just lost its configuration you should be able to just recreate the array exactly the same and it will all be OK. Of course I have not done the same on that particular controller myself so no guarantees.
