Lost Licence - Need To Use Public Transport [Sydney]

First of all, let me state that I am a firm believer in "you do the crime, pay the time" and this is not a post about my licence and how I want it back

I am a Red P Plater in NSW and was caught doing 93 in a 70 zone (it was down a massive hill -still no excuse, I know) and am now losing my licence for 3 months

Whilst it is frustrating and I will cop it from my parents, my question to all of you is in finding cheap ways for public transport in Sydney. Whilst I will be saving money on fuel (only good outcome of this) I will be hit by public transport again.
Without going into too much detail, I live pretty local to work (manager at McDonalds) and can walk there, however I study at William Blue on the rocks and in Crowsnest. I am inquiring if anyone knows the best ways for public transport in terms of price (its been a bit since I've used public transport)

I have a regular opal card, and am now going to apply for a student concession after the above ordeal. However that is going to take a minimum of 6-7 weeks to be delivered (this is what all my mates from uni have said) which is basically half of the 'time' I have to serve.

Any help in regards to transport and the best possible price would be great (I only work max of 3-4 days at work due to above education)

UPDATE
so i have discussed buying a bike but my parents wont let me (even tho im 20 they use the excuse of "your still under our roof". they say the bike is too dangerous in sydney)

little upset after finding out the opal hack was stopped. just rang sydney transport earlier to finish applying for concession and they said 6-8 weeks.

Thanks

Spare yourself the details on OzBargain, some people are just going to rip on you.

This is what you're looking for: http://tp.transportnsw.info/

    • thankyou.
had a look at that, but was more interested in cheapness of things. i read something about an opal card hack where people tapped on and off etc

I heard that the hole was closed

The Opal "hacks" you seek are no more. Buy a motorised bicycle.

When you have concession your rates are much lower anyway, there's really no cheaper travel once you obtain a Concession Opal.

    opal hacks lol
people who exploited the system stuffed it for everyone

im glad they closed the bugs in the system
given people who ripped off the system are the first to moan when its price goes up

    go figure

Did you try applying for a Special Hardship Order through the courts to enable you to continue driving at limited times? Probably a different name in NSW.

Red p plater would be lucky to get one of those. Hasn't been driving long enough to establish a pattern of use that is essential.

    • im not going to bother. as i have stated above, i will just deal with the 3 months. but thanks anyway

    pub. transport

    uber?

    • Uber is really expensive

      • +1

with all the $ off codes, would be pretty cheap IMO

        • Totally agree with you there suruasoraeB

        • Which codes? I've only seen x $ off for "new users" lately, nothing for existing users.

        • @bonezAU:

well. I was referring to that

        • @Bearosaurus:

Bugger, I was hoping there were codes for existing users. I've been using Uber a fair bit lately and it's pretty cheap but the cheaper I can make it the better :)

          @bonezAU:

          Free rides in Adelaide!

      • Is it Uber expensive?

  • Hard to know what could beat the train for access to St Leonards and the Rocks, but I suppose it depends where you are coming from.

    • essentially im coming from top ryde

  • well the closest/cheapest you could do is to do a one stop bus ride($2.1) every hour on Monday.

93 in a 70 zone- yep that hill added 23km!

    • I recently drove down a hill while using cruise control, my speedo still managed to go up to 90kms, the legal speed limit in that zone was 70kms. It was a honest mistake.

Leave the guy alone, he knows he made a mistake - Big shit! You've never gotten one speeding ticket or made any small mistake in your life? sheesssh!
As mentioned here before, even if cruise control is on you can still pick up speed going down a hill, it's a natural occurrence, not his fault the police were looking for speeding vehicles conveniently at the bottom of a hill

  • Carpool? Check with your work colleagues.

OzBargainers walk everywhere. $0 running cost (pun intended)

  • Must be a different system in NSW.
In Vic if you're fined doing 15 - 24 km/h over you'll receive a fine of about $300 and 3 points - i know this doesnt help but lol.

    Bad Advice following:

Just keep driving without your licence and 'pray' you don't get pinged for it, AND
If you have a sibling or friend who looks like you just 'borrow' their licence and drive on that.

    Problem Solved.

    WELCOME :-)
