Overwatch Post Beta - What do you guys think?

I spent about 20 hours playing it during the beta and it was fantastic. What did you guys think? Has anyone pre-ordered yet? I noticed the pre-order price is slowly going from about $50AUD to $60 now so I guess that's a good sign that people are liking the game a lot.

  • I had a blast but found it a bit of a learning curve with such varied abilities of each hero to work out (and then remember) the controls of each one. I'm sure I'd get used to it over time. Also a bit frustrating against hardcore FPS players who never miss a shot. I can't see myself picking it up at full price, especially with uncertainty of how the microtransactions are going to work (eg: play to win with paid characters or maps), but I could see myself picking it up when it gets to around the $20 mark.

    • What's been stated so far on microtransactions is that maps and characters are free; microtransactions will exist in the form of loot boxes if you want instant gratification if not exp caps at lvl 22 or so and every time you level you'll get a lootbox

edit: exp to next lvl caps out at 22k exp at lvl 23

      • I hope they adopt a similar method such as Hearthstone but less intense since we are paying for the game itself first up. I'm happy to keep paying for extras after as long as better content comes out keeping the game alive.

        • they initially started with it being FFP but shelved it citing imbalanced teams would be an issue and effect the overall gameplay
which i imagine it would…especially during the low levels

  • I only got into it on the last day for a few hours but enjoyed it when playing with others I know.
If I can pick it up for US$40 I'll grab it so I can get the most out of it early on.

  • Has the price actually gone up? I saw it was $70AUD which seemed higher, but googling showed games sites saying that was the price months ago

    • Yeah, it was posted on here for about $50AUD 3 moths ago from cdkeys. $55 from g2a during the beta and ~$60 now from g2a being the cheapest I can find.

      • Ah cool. I assumed (wrongly) that it was standard price everywhere

    • I bought the Origin version for $65 AUD, when Beta about to end. It seems the origin version has up to $75 and out of stock as well

      • The problem is the ozgameshop reps told me in the chat that these are EU keys. My account and most of my friends are on the NA servers so I had to buy it elsewhere.

        • Overwatch seems to support Global Play?
So you dont need really need US key to play in US server.

At least that what happen to me when I played Diablo 3, I can play in US server and EU server, although both has different save games and non-transferable.

        • +1

@dione: You might be right there but ozgameshop has a disclaimer as you can find here:http://www.ozgameshop.com/pc-games/overwatch-origins-edition-pc-cd-key-download-for-battle-net-inc-noire-widow-maker-skin-dlc

"Please Note: This is the European version of the game and may require a European Battle.net account to register. Play in any game region (Players can choose to play on game servers based in a variety of regions, regardless of what region they are connecting from. Supported regions will be listed in your game client)."

So it's more about where your account is originally from. Mine is the US and I have a lot invested into it (HS/WOW) so I would prefer to activate the game on my main account rather than create a separate European account to play Overwatch. I don't know if it will affect my gameplay with other regions but with games like WOW, I couldn't join European servers to play with my friends over there even when I change my region on my US account to EU.

        • @watty: I heard WOW is a bit tricky regarding region, but my experience with Diablo 3 is so far so good, I have separate character in EU server and US server. My Battle NET account itself listed the country as Australia.

        • @dione: Yeah I spent hours trying to figure out WOW with no luck. Just letting you know EB will price match JB and my local store said if a lower price comes out they can price match it as long as it is a physical store. The main thing is ozgameshop will send the key out the morning after for us (time zones) and it's currently out of stock (for those looking to pick up a copy). For another $4 you can get a baby Wiston figurine and you can pick up the game on the exact day :)

But I'm guessing the game starts on Wednesday (25th) for us since that would be the 24th for them. I just went the less hassle way for like another $14 lol

  • I actually purchased a couple of keys from cdkeys.com for $50 each before the beta started and was a little worried I would regret it, but in the end played about 30 hours and loved it.

I won't go into detail of what I like/dislike, but I do think the game/community will need a little time to fully understand Overwatch. I noticed a lot of 'me players' during the open beta where players either didn't want to, or were not aware of changing heroes mid game, or countering other heroes. This is evident by all the rage over Bastion and Torjborn being overpowered, although they can be countered rather easily with a bit of experience and the right characters. Personally I get a great degree of satisfaction when I Genji reflect Bastion's minigun back and melt him, or flank with Pharah, or siege Trojborn with Junkrat.

Overall, I think it has a leg up being a Blizzard game, and thus will have a staying power. I would love to see something along a CTF mode, or even a push/ pull node mode where either team starts with a node on either end, with 3 neutrals between (or even starting with two nodes each, and contention on the centre node), although I suspect this would break their 10 minute games.

I don't think it will be for everyone, but when people start playing Overwatch 'as intended' vs playing 'as they want*' (in a team based game), it will make it a completely different game compare to (what I suspect) most players experienced in open beta.

*This will happen either way, and I've already seen YouTube comments about "I paid for the game, I'll play how I want". Fortunately Blizzard put in a system where you can reduce or increase you chance of matching with players you have played with before, so three months later if you're still meeting players like this (and it bothers you), you can avoid them.

    • CTF would seem extremely hard to balance given some of the abilities some characters have
push/pull you speak of would be a slightly different version of domination

would not mind seeing either on the roster of maps

      • Essentially, yes. I remember the mode from Day of Defeat Classic, and (from what I remember) it was awesome. I think SW Battlefront had a similar mode, and I'm not sure if it made it into DoDSource, but I think it would be fantastic for Overwatch. It would definitely require an enforced timer, something like whoever holds most nodes at 15 minutes, allowing for over time of course.

Similarly, I was thinking a multi node king of the hill/domination (ala Unreal Tournament), but I think 'splitting the team' is a little against the design. I definitely agree that CTF would be incredibly hard to balance and probably never going to happen.

it is still early days though, and while I have no issue with what is currently available, I'd be rather surprised if that was it, and they weren't going to look at new modes outside of Tavern Brawl's shenanigans.
