Recent Migrants in Australia - Life & Occupation

Hi all,

As a migrant in Australia (I'm from Vietnam), I know it's a bit hard to settle things when you're new.

If you're in same situation, share your stories!
(how you make it down under, what're up to now, how u like it down under?)

Mine: came as student and have partner sponsor, now working in accounting and want to be a financial planner.
I love meat pie, Port Adelaide Power and dream of a night watching the milky way in Alice Springs.

CHEERS!

I love meat pie, Port Adelaide Power

    Stopped reading there.

  • How do you pronounce Pho? The beef noodle dish

I have a Vietnamese friend. He is now an academic in engineering at a major university in Australia. Very smart man.

Words of advice: Just be yourself.

I always remember people trying hard to fit in at the pub. There is almost always a group learning up on sports related material just so they have something to talk about. If you don't like it, you don't have to turn up and waste your money on beer.

Don't put too much effort into assimilating, because even if you are the real thing, chances are people will still look down upon you. lol.

we're only looking down at him because he's an AFL fan

      • …of Port Adelaide.

    F@&# off, we're full!

Just joking. Welcome, and thanks for choosing Australia.

Let us non-migrants know what we can do to help you out too!

Good on you Fred, for trying to fit in!…I'm Australian and I love Vietnamese food….go figure!

No matter where you finish up, whinging about how good things are where you came from, is not a formula for assimilation…for a start it doesn't ring true…..if things were so great there, why wouldn't you stay?!

That is not to say, you shouldn't be proud of your heritage, but if your here, why not make the best of it. This country offers a lot, to those willing to partake, not the least of which is safety and freedom.

So, if you like to eat meat pies and follow Port (double yuk, but your choice!)….more power to you! (pardon the pun)….the stars in a clear desert sky is a wondrous sight ain't it???

    • Not to rain on anyone's parade but vietnamese foods here are no where what you get in vietnam and it doesn't even taste the same.

Genuine pho in vietnam is so much better than the Pho here.

You could buy pho in a fancy restaurant in Australia for $12 AUD but the broth and quality of the noodles still doesn't compare to a $2.50 pho in Vietnam.

I guess the bone broth makes all the difference.

I just want to commend you on your written English skills…I wish some of my Aussie born & educated colleagues had your grasp of grammar & spelling.

    Welcome to Oz! :)

  • Yep, eaten Vietnamese food both here and there and I'm a fan of both styles, although I reckon that I may have the answer. Vietnam's and most of the food from the surrounding Countries use a lot of coriander and the Australian type doesn't seem to have the same taste!

You're right on the Australian stuff, because the Vietnamese restaurants here, have to make a buck and Australians (by and large), don't like the heat of the chillies and the salt of the fish sauce, but me….I can't get enough!….and you CAN get the authentic style here, if you know where to go!

But….I can't find anyone importing authentic Cau Lao noodles here, and I can't afford to go to Hoi An, every week!

    • That's usually the problem with Asian foods in Australia

90% of them are made for Western tastes and the ingredients used in recipes require a bit of 'substitution', for lack of a better word. So the authenticity of the dish goes out the window and we have bastardised versions of the dish which have been modified to better suit local taste and to make sure the ingredients are easily available.

      • Hey, you know the trick in Australia…..you eat where they eat!…..or else you will be condemned to eating Luke Nguyen's version of a pot au feu…instead of the heavenly…. "pho"!

  • Hey guys,

My first AFL experience was actually a Power game in a corporate box so yeah, Power, why not!
I also follow local basketball, soccer & baseball in summer. In general, there're so much sports around your neighbourhood in Adelaide (not sure elsewhere).

As a meat lover, meat pie with me is so much better than Pho (fur) although almost nothing could beat a bowl of Pho on a chilly morning!

I'm surprised that old-school forum like Ozbargain is popular nowadays. I actually like it better than Facebook now!

"corporate box" eh?….not only are you trying to fit in, but yo have begun your corporate crawl to the top…..Dude, I think you are going to make it!!!

  • Hi frediecoy

I don't think you ever got the replies you expected from other immigrants in Australia. So here is my version:

Got here from Venezuela almost 4 years ago now. Started as an international student and hopefully will be getting my permanent residency in a couple of months. Started in Brisbane and now living in Perth with my wife (also Venezuelan).

I haven't been so good at adjusting as you have. Still struggle with the slang and with the footy.

Loving the country and it's people. Thankfully everyone has been great and have not had any bad experience with racism at all.

And also have become an addict to OzBargain. Although I still haven't bought my first eneloops, so I'm not officially an ozbargainer yet.

Wish you the best of luck in this great country!
