Telstra Pre-Paid and Google Play

I've purchased several Telstra $30 pre-paid SIM cards and I'm trying to use them in the Google Play Store. Has anyone tried recently to verify a new Telstra pre-paid SIM card for the Google Play Store successfully? It's just that, lately (I've been able to get it to work previously), the verification process is not working.

I'm thinking that the receiving number where the SMS is going to doesn't work. This number is 0427 xxx xxx. If you were to ring this number it says that the number is disengaged or that the person has their phone turned off.

Is anyone else on the same boat as me?

  • Had the same problem. Hop on to Telstra chat and they'll fix it for you.

  • Telstra chat? I'll give them a try. I've just been on the phone with them for the past hour and with Google for the past 30 minutes.

    Thanks!

  • Yep, had the same problem. Did what DrPotato said. Worked after that.

  • If you have a dual SIM phone, make sure the non-Telstra SIM is disabled otherwise the SMS may come via the non-Telstra account and be rejected (and waste one SMS). It has to come via the Telstra account.

  • I've had this problem twice. The first time they fixed it for me within a matter of hours.

Telstra jerked with around for about 2 days when I got a new prepaid sim. They said have reset my telstra billing account, blah blah blah…
I called them and told them it still doesn't work. In the end, I gave up and just went on an $80 Optus 24 month contract. lol
I'm happy that i don't have to do this number porting stuff for at least 2 years.

  • It's a Nexus 5, so single SIM only.

I was on Telstra chat for a good hour or so again and no go. They weren't of any help. However, checking Telstra's Service Status page seems to indicate there are issues, in particular their SMS services. Considering an SMS needs to be sent to verify the account, I'm thinking that's the problem.

Now the Telstra chat people were not able to identify the error or the problem at all, so I may not buy any more of their pre-paid SIMs for Google Play Store use having had this miserable experience with their uninformed technical help people.

It takes 48 hours from activation of the sim card until you can use it for google play. I have never received a sms for confirmation either just waited the 48 hours.

Yep had this problem yesterday and spoke to telstra. They had an emergency maintenance which was completed this morning so it should be working now.

  • Had a similar problem, have previously made Google play Telstra purchases. Just stopped working, tried turning off dual SIM didn't fix it so…

    Logged into the Google wallet.
Found two Telstra SIMs active for payment.
    Deleted them both.
Rebooted the phone with only the Telstra SIM active.
    Went to play store.
Clicked to buy an app, okd the permissions.
Selected payment method (this time Telstra was now listed)
Successfully billed to my $5 cost actual $30 prepaid SIM.
