If the drive is brand new it won't have a volume — it is not yet ready to use.

Did you perhaps forgot to initialize the drive?

    Quick and easy way

Press WIN+R to open RUN dialog box

    run the program diskpart

DiskPart doesn't have a user interface, so all operations are done via command line.

    enter the following commands:

    list disk

select disk X where X is the disk you wish to initialize and then press enter

    clean

    create partition primary

    format quick fs=ntfs

    assign

    exit

If the disk does not show up when you use list disk that probably means there's something wrong with the enclosure. Connect the drive directly to your computer and try again.

    • The drive is not new, in fact 5 years old but working while connecting to PC directly.

      • external USB HDD enclosures use a sata to USB converter. so if you used the HDD in your PC, then placed it in an external enclosure and vice versa, windows won't display it. to check it right click on my computer > manage > disk management and see if your drive is listed, if it is you'll need to format and create a new partition to use your hdd in the exclosure. backup all data before format.

        • Hmm, this might be it, will check and report back tomorrow.

        • @bargainaus:

This isn't always the case, I have a USB to SATA converter cable that I frequently use to pull data out of laptop drives, a very handy piece of kit for computer repairs.

When I use the cable it's just SATA -> USB to the computer and i can browse the contents with no issues. It is no different to using a USB caddy, dock or enclosure — the guts are the same. The drive doesn't need to be re-formatted even if it was being used as Windows drive.

So it is very strange that a computer isn't able to see or detect the drive when it is connected via USB. It could be a USB driver issue or even a hardware issue with the enclosure itself. Why don't you try buying that cable I mentioned and see if that works??

        • @scrimshaw: interesting cable.

          i had a similar problem,
when i swapped my hdd in and out of my enclosure it wouldn't display, and appeared as raw in disk management.
i thought that the pcb board was for some kind of conversion. and that was causing it not to display, and show as raw in disk management.

looking up that cable, got me researching what the cause actually was.

the cause was that my nextstar exclosure is configured for 4k lba instead of 512, and when i connected the drive directly to the sata port on the motherboard, it exposed the drives 512 sectors. causing it not to display, and to appear as raw in disk management.

you learn a new thing everyday on ozbargain.

          thanks scrimshaw :)

        • Got it working, turns out driver installation needs a restart. FML.

          Thanks guys.

  • yup scrimshaw is right.

  • it needs external power. sometimes they get power but not enough to proove the transport method… ie 12mbs will not allow a drive to 'resovlve'

    • I have similar experience on a Maxtor external drive. The power adaptor was dying. It supplied enough electricity to spin the disc, but not enough to start the drive controller. All was well after swapping in a spare power adaptor.

    • Guys, we are talking about 2.5" internal HDD here.

      • the 'whirling' is the hunger of power, grrrr…8]

      • Have you tried connecting it to a powered USB hub?
