Washing machine: repair or new one

Front loading Samsung washing machine door stuck, I think I've broken the latch and have tried all the tricks online but can't get it to open without breaking it. It's about 6 years old. Should I get it repaired or buy a new one?

Depending on your needs you might find a new machine has some better wash modes and possibly uses less water/power. We just replaced our 6 year old Samsung with a new unit, giving us a hot water inlet (using cheaper off-peak hot water), a really quick wash cycle, some good allergy hot wash cycles, quieter wash cycles, and we went for a larger unit that better suits the family wash. Fisher & Paykal Washsmart was what we ended up going for.

Our Samsung had a really poor design which made it really hard for technicians to get into it and repair stuff. We had it repaired twice under warranty and the techs complained each time. When we started having problems we decided it was probably going to be expensive due to hassle of getting into the thing. The F&P unit seems a lot more open, easy access panel on the back.

    • Depending on how far away your hws is and how much water your machine needs, that hot water inlet may be useless. It could be full before the hot water gets through the pipes to it!

    which model?

have you tried running a spin-only-cycle a few times.

I suggest that as front loaders will keep the door "locked" if there is water in the barrel.

the spin cycle kicks the water pump into action and pumps out excess water.

I would get it fixed if it has been trustworthy all this time, new washing machines seem to catch on fire.

if its not a serious or dangerous fault just fix it should be easy enough to fix but when saying that how much is the call out fee for a washing machine mechanic now days?

I had a similar issue with our Bosch washer. I called them and they gave me advice over the phone what I could do before their technician would be booked. Turns out there was a small door and inside a wire to pull that would unlock the door.

  • hello OP, how did you go?
I am in the same boat as you are, our problems started when the spider broke few weeks ago, service quotes were approx 600 so I decided to take the whole machine apart and successfully replaced the spider, this cost me about 150 just for the part.
Now the door is stuck and we managed to break the handle attempting to force open Sigh..

Just wanted to if you some how managed to get this fixed and if so how and for how much, I am leaning towards getting a new one as I can't be dealing with fixing this every week. Having said that I dont rally want to spend $1000+ on a washer now :(

    • Had same on a Samsung, the handle broke with the machine closed. Had to take the top off and front panel out and was then able to reach the door release from the inside. Opened the door, removed the door handle (you can only do this from the inside) and replaced with a new one from ebay which was $20 or so.

It turned out to be an easy job.

      • I did manage to repair the handle for $14 and machine has been working fine since. :)
