Cheap but Effective Roadside Assist?

Car is 1997 Magna, so only concerned about towing to nearest repair shop if it breaks down.

Is this legit? Other suggestions are welcome. :)

I have never bothered with any of these road side assist programs after a terrible experience with racq about 15 years ago.
I rang them up after a horrible noise under the bonnet. They turned up and said that I would have to get a hotel room for the night and that the car needed towing to their garage. I said "whats wrong with the car?"….they said "your air con is broken"
It turns out that the compressor on the air con was broken, I then said, "well disconnect the compressor" The moron then got upset and cut the belt. I then took it to my mechanic the next day and paid about $50 (fitted) to get it fixed. My mechanic then asked me why I cut the belt. I told him the story and he was shocked. The moron cut the belt because he was missing out on "a big earner"…I believe these road side assist programs are a joke. Just a money making scheme run by thieves. If you want to get your battery jump started ask a friend or neighbour.

thats shocking and i absolutely agree thats why he did it. the compressor is big $$$,

nrma is better than that, if they did such and you reported it they would've sorted it out - they take complaints seriously. NRMA roadside assistance has been fantastic for me - locked keys in car, dog stood on locks and they made it an emergency, left lights on, change flat tires. most the guys only work for nrma so they have no reason to rip me off.

My racq guy is top notch, in all things there will be shit and good. Id have rang racq Nd complained about that though…

  • It's a Magna…you won't need roadside assistance.

    • Full Commando then?

      • Good maintenance is the key 🔧

Yep, just carry a screwdriver with you so if it breaks down you can remove the number plates and break the compliance plate off and then get a taxi home

      • break the compliance plate off

Can you elaborate it a bit?

    • Exactly, if it breaks you just sell it to the tow truck driver and buy another one.

For roadside assistance, you'll literally get what you pay for.

    Stick with an AAA Member

Just dropped roadside assist for my car. Cost $110 per year. Couple of years and I'll have enough for a short tow, which is all my car would ever get as it doesn't stray far from home often. I'm capable of watching a fuel guage, jump or clutch starting, changing a tyre, keeping the keys outside the car when locked or finding my way home to get the other car and some tools.

My wife's car remains with roadside assist though. While it's unlikely to break down it is the car that goes on holidays, and she would struggle changing a heavy SUV tyre.

    • Agree. Ever since I had a car I haven't bothered with roadside assistance. And have probably saved enough for several tows over the years.

And if I ever do need a tow, there are one-man operators who advertise on gumtree and just use a car trailer and a 4WD with a winch. They're probably half the price of the professional tow companies.

I dropped it recently on the understanding that I can join NRMA on the spot if I break down. Its costs a bit more but not much more than regular annual cost.

That's true but if we all did that there would be no NRMA. The "A" stands for Association…people banding together to help each other.

Ah cool I did not know this… Is it for any subscription? Doesnt their policy usually apply a day or so after it is purchased? Btw, can victorians get NRMA?

edit: I found this in the T&C:
      . When do Your Membership
      entitlements become available?
Roadside Assistance benefits, Towing and Major
      Mechanical Breakdown Entitlements become available
48 hours (or when otherwise authorised by us) after You
have purchased or upgraded a Subscription Package
or if You change Your Nominated Vehicle more than
once within a Subscription Year. A request made after
48 hours for a pre-existing Breakdown will not receive
Roadside Assistance benefits, Towing and Major
Mechanical Breakdown Entitlements. If You require
Roadside Assistance and (a) You have not notified us that
Your Nominated Vehicle has changed and (b) You have
changed Your Nominated Vehicle more than once within
a Subscription Year, then You must pay an On-Road Join

      "… Its costs a bit more…"

Actually, it costs a WHOLE LOT more… they are awake to this line of thinking.

  • recently paid for the annual car insurance payment and noted that the price they quoted was 70 dollars more than buying the same policy with the same company online. Also noted that the new online policy offered roadside assistance as a new thing the company was starting.

called them and pointed these things out. the call centre person deducted $20 from my yearly insurance payment due and added on the roadside assist.

    happy with the result

  • I got free Allianz roadside assistance with my comprehensive insurance.

I'm with Youi and I get free roadside assistance with my comprehensive policy.

  • Not sure where you're located, but if you are a member of the NRMA, you'll also get a discount on servicing, if you use one of their service centres. I've had generally positive experiences with them (South Strathfield and Marrickville).
