Mazda 3 Maxx vs Maxx Sport/SP23

Hi guys,

I'm interested in purchasing a second hand Mazda 3. I just wanted to know if someone could tell me more about the Mazda 3 if they own it/have owned it previously. For instance, what is the difference between the Maxx and Maxx sport? Which is worth buying and why? Is it reliable? Don't want the car to mess up every second day as i plan on keeping it for a while. I don't know too much about cars but I really like the look of it, how it's small and looks sporty.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

p.s My budget isn't too large but i plan on spending roughly around $7000-$10000.

  • 6 monthly servicing if you want to go by the book.
Reliability will come down to how it's been treated, given that the cars in your price range are used cars and outside warranty.

I've got a 2004 Maxx Sport that I've had since 2010 but in the last month it has become my partner's car when we also bought a 2010 SP25. I bought it on 120,000 km it's now done 185,000 and it hasn't missed a beat. I service every 10,000km, and putting better tyres on at 150,000 has made a massive difference for road noise and I'm going to do the engine mounts at 190,000.

When driving the Maxx versus the SP25 now the SP25 feels much nippier, but with a slightly bigger engine uses a bit more fuel… The Maxx never felt sluggish, just in direct comparison it isn't as powerful. Also, if you can it's worth getting a car with reverse sensors as it can be a bit hard to see how far back the car is when you're reversing.

I'm not sure on the differences between the Maxx and Maxx sport models- my friend has a Maxx and I think it's mainly just some cosmetic tweaks, slightly different trim, rear spoiler, skirts. They both have cruise control and alloy wheels which is why I was looking at Maxx and Maxx Sports over the Neos.
