    "Nbn ready"
You'll need to be more specific than that these days.
Is your area getting FttP (unlikely if it's not already being rolled out), FttN, HFC, Fixed Wireless or Sattelite?

If FttP/Fixed Wireless or Satellite, then you just need a WAN port.
If FttN, then you need a VDSL2 modem with g.inp support
If HFC, well we don't actually know yet

    • How do I find that? I'm am with TPG and have always had nbn in Bundoora Vic

      • go to mynbn.info and plug in your address
        Looks like HFC (Foxtel cable)
        http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2015/10/here-is-every-suburb-th…

HFC NBN modems haven't been released yet.
Ideally you should just dump ADSL and get Telstra Cable (it's highly likely that their modem will be NBN compatible) installed now.
Their prices are pretty reasonable these days and the performance is pretty good too.

        • I have got FTTP at my place. Just checked!

        • @BrockLee:
So you don't need a modem at all, you just need a router.

        • @scubacoles: Wow! Is that right? I didnt know that. I do have an NBN box on the wall.
Right now I have a TPG modem router where I plug in my username password. So just a wifi router would do the job for me? Where would I plug in the ISP details? Thanks So much

        • @BrockLee:

With FTTP NBN you can also use your existing ADSL modem. all ADSL modems can operate in router only mode.

The instructions on how to setup a router for NBN usage is given by your provider. Usually, in WAN cofiguration page, it is 'PPPOE' you need to select, and then - you supply a username, password and that's really it

        • @BrockLee:
In the WAN login area of the router.
If you've plugged the current modem into the WAN port you're bypassing the (ADSL) modem and just using the router features of the modem/router already.
If you get the same brand of router then the login screen will likely look the same or similar.

The NBN box on the wall is acting as the modem.

        • [@scubacoles]@scrimshaw: so now that's sorted. What router should I buy?

        • @BrockLee:
What's wrong with your current one?
          That'll guide the recommendations.

        • @scubacoles: it came from tpg. Keeps dropping out all the time. Plus I want access to features such as slowing down a particular pc connected to network, blocking particular domains and a bit more control over QoS. Three people six devices

          @BrockLee:
          That's getting pretty technical!
Genuine question given that you didn't know you had FttP nor that you only needed a router (not a modem/router) are you technically up to the challenge? I'd rate my skills above average and even I'd be seeking some assistance to do what you've described!
The TPG modem probably has the features you want, but they aren't implemented.

Netgear has some "simplistic" parental controls that I think can be used to implement the features you want to use.
The R7000 suggested below is a beast from their range.
Frankly, I suspect the WNDR3700 would be sufficient unless you really NEED AC wireless.

        • @scubacoles: Thank you all for expert advice. Got myself Netgear Nighthawk R8000 X6 for $250 pricematched after Amex $50 cashback from goodguys

    R7000

    • Agreed! at that price range, R7000 can't go wrong

    • Or at the "bottom" end TP-Link C5 for about $130

    • Thank you

  • I think TPLink C7 will do if you are living in a small house for about $169

  • Cant seem to find good deals on R7000. Is it worth waiting for a deal on R7000 or perhaps R8000 which previously has been for $210 delivered?
