YouTube Red + Google Music $9.99/Month (Normally $11.99) @ YouTube

2210

YouTube Red has finally come to Australia. Google has announced an initial price of $9.99. Good for those who want to jump on it at launch.

It removes ads and allows users to save any video for offline playback. This is alongside a dedicated app for listening to music. Making this a pretty sweet deal as it doubles as a music streaming app.

      • Cool story

  • Anyone found if the family plan has also gone down. ie normally $12 a month and $18 for family. Now that $10 a month, can i get family for $15?

  • You can get background playback/block ads for free with rooted/jailbroken mods FYI!

  • +2

Got this and cancelled my Spotify membership

  • +1

I use YouTube Plus, it's IMO more ethical than just blocking ads everywhere - it blocks ads on people who you haven't subbed to. So yeah..

    • The lesser of two evils I guess!

  • +1

Use IDM to download youthbe videos and save $9.99 monthly

  • Weighing out the options between youtube ads or how used I am to spotify..

  • Seems only worthwhile if you already subscribe to Google Music. Which I do, so happy for complimentary YouTube Red access as well, but definitely uninterested in paying for it exclusively

  • Where do I signup for family?

  • Worth it purely for 10% off if you are a Telstra Prepaid customer. Especially since it comes wirh Google Play music.

    • How do you get 10% off I'm also a Telstra prepaid customer

  • Anyone able to test out the YouTube Music app? I can't seem to log in to it - it always takes me to the phone's "Add a Google account" page which won't let me add an existing one. Doesn't work on a Galaxy S7 Edge nor an Xperia E1.

Apparently this app is required to be able to listen to YT without downloading the video.

If you can test, please let me know whether it works and what phone you have.

Worked for me on a Galaxy S6. I was already signed in to the account on the regular youtube app - perhaps confirm that first?

      • Yea, I definitely was. Went through all the rituals of clearing data, reinstalling, signing in, etc., for GP Music, YT proper and YT music.

Eventually got it working by signing into a different Google account - which got me into the app - and then switching to the correct account that it suddenly detected.

        I hope it stays working…

Just signed up to this and left Spotify. I dont use this much but i like my Youtube videos without ads.

getting family plan going is a slight task if you don't have an android device.

I used bluestacks android for windows to set it up.

as I have been paying $18 for apple music by itself- this is the same price and I get no ads and offline downloading for youtube. being a family - kids and wife are going to love no ads and offline mode for kids was great back when apps were still available - I been waiting for this for a while to do it legit so big plus.

some things I might add going from apple music is - couple of albums that were on apple music aren't available on google music and I have just scratched the surface so hopefully this doesn't reflect any more.

youtube red offline vids are capped at 720pm - slightly disappointing but I suppose keeping that res will save me space.

as a long time apple user I am definitely seeing a lot more value with both these services.

  • this is fantastic news - received email from google regarding this change, happy to have additional services and lower price!

  • It removes ads and allows users to save any video for offline playback

  • Is it possible to pay for it with my Telstra prepaid credit?

    • +1

Doesn't look like it so far. You can subscribe to Google Play Music with carrier billing though. It comes with YouTube Red.

  • +2

Awesome still have months of Pre paid Google music for $5.99/m back when we were using the gift yourself work around.

  • Anyone know if its possible to get songs from youtube and save them to a playlist in google music? what is Youtube Music and how do I use that.

    • It is not possible, Youtube music is a separate app.

    • You can either create a playlist in youtube and download those for offline on youtube or download the actual mp3 and upload them to Play Music. I'm not sure if the same playlist carries across between both apps. Youtube Music is just another app of Youtube but specific for Music genre. You can use Youtube Red on normal Youtube app.

      • From what I can tell, normal YT app will always stream the video. You need YT Music if you want to stream audio-only (data usage, etc.). Dumb that they separated it like that, but I guess that's just how it goes.

        • Didn't notice that. Will check this out. I guess if you save a video for offline, it doesn't matter if it plays video in the backend. Thanks!

        • @krazed15:

That's just what I had heard, but after trying it for a bit today it seems that normal YT won't stream video when in the background. But I'm just going by data usage so I'm not sure.

YT Music has no playlist support, making it pretty useless. Radio and shitty search, that's all.

there are plenty of Youtube ad blocker extensions for chrome and they are free

  • Does offline playback work on iPad?

  • Can I use my telstra prepaid credit for subscription?

  • +1

If any Google Play Music subscribers are still being prompted to subscribe to Youtube Red when accessing the page, see this post

  • I use to convert yt music videos to mp3 so I can listen to them on the phone, youtube red fixes that problem yippee!

I just played "My station (endless personalised music)" and it played a guitar tuning video that I've watched before! It's not a song, it's just someone playing each string repeatedly, but I guess it's listed as "music" so it gets played lol. Hope they fix things like this.

  • Glad I topped up on the $6 GPM Gift Card offer while it was around :)

  • +1

I'm a subscriber to Google Play Music but I can't get access to YouTube Red. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

    • Yeah same. Seems like it's affecting a bunch of people, but apparently they're looking into the issue. Just have to wait I suppose :(

      • Yeah I just read through this topic and saw a few other people experiencing the same problem. Yeah I contacted YouTube and they said around 24 hours the issue should be resolved. Hopefully that is the case haha.

    • +1

Just sign up to the 14 day trial, if you want 30 days, then they ask you to pay, that's fine, enter payment, they won't charge you. Then go into youtube red settings and cancel. You still keep the 30 day youtube red trial.

Voila you got youtube red, while you wait for them to resolve the backend issue. (I am sure it won't take them 30 days)

  • I haven't read all the comments, but I installed the new Youtube Music app and they automatically gave me a month free Youtube Red with no auto charge

  • Hey How does this work with a family pass? If i upgrade to the family pass does everyone get Youtube RED?

    • Answered above. please ignore.

  • Why are people saying this is a trial? The email i got said nothing about a trial https://db.tt/eOoRFNPt

  • +1

Based on my Youtube Channel stats, RED has failed to make a solid impact overseas, so I'm not expecting any difference here.

They should have at least tried a 30-day free promo first.

Typical Google: lousy product that will fail like most things they do other than selling people's attention without their permission.

      • +1

You are confusing Google with Microsoft lol.

  • +1

Just remember that data is not charged for Google Music for certain Optus prepaid plans (28 day plans) as long as you have credit with min. $30 recharge:

People who don't want to pay and intelligent enough to have an android phone may consider snaptube with exactly same functionality

    http://www.snaptubeapp.com/

    • -8

You don't need to be very intelligent to own an Android phone and Android's user base is significantly less wealthy than the smaller, more exclusive iOS users.

  • -4

It is free now. Not going to pay for those feautures for something that should be free

  • Well, this explains why a lot of videos recently became "not available in your country" or don't even turn up in searches any more.

  • Have yet to find a better tool for grabbing Youtube videos than youtube-dl: https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/

  • -2

Why is YouTube Red so expensive? The price is unrealistic.

    • +1

Hmm? YouTube Red is free with a Google Play Music subscription that costs $9.99/month. That's cheaper than Spotify's $11.99/month.

      :)

  • Not sure if it's been posted so far, but if you have a chromecast, check the offers in the googlecast app, had 90 days free google play music, then $9.99 a month after that. Going to give it a go for the 90 days and see if it's worthwhile for me. Haven't used spotify or any other streaming before.
Stoked to have no more youtube adds though!

  • Anyone know if we can use google play gift cards to pay for the subscription?

  • -2

A true ozbargainer like myself would just get a script running extension like grease monkey with a YouTube script for free. They can remove adds, let you download videos (in a few various formats and differing qualities) and even let you edit layout on the website itself like your subscriptions uploads, ect.

Save yourself the $9.99. Do the research. Be a true ozbargainer.

    • +5

There are "true" ozbargainers who would find every loophole to squeeze the merchant dry. There are also "true" ozbargainers who would shop smart but also want to reward the merchant who puts in the best effort. I wouldn't call one or the other THE true ozbargainer, but I do prefer the later.

    • Save yourself the $9.99. Do the research.

Do the research and see what you actually get for $9.99. Your method does not get you music streaming with Google Play Music, easy offline videos from your mobile, extra content, and youtube music.

    • -1

How do you get access to the huge music library that this subscription will provide? Some script again? Or do you suggest torrenting in order to be a true ozbargainer?

      Do the research please.

    • +1

      No value add?

You get google play music… and offline youtube… much yay

  • Gift prices for Google Play Music haven't yet dropped to the lower price (still $11.99/m), I will definitely load up using my Telstra Prepaid credit when it hopefully changes soon! That is unless anyone else knows how to buy multiple months of subscription for $9.99/m? I'm heading overseas soon so all my banked up prepaid credit will expire unless I spend it first.

  • Weird choice of name, since there is a RedTube around. Why don't they name it something else?
