First Steps to Take When You Receive a New Xiaomi Phone?

I'm hearing a lot about bloatware when you purchase a phone overseas, I just received my Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro from Geek buying and I'm wonder what the first step is when you start it up? Do I just go to http://en.miui.com/download-298.html and download the rom and install it? Or is there no need to?

There isn't bloatware as you commonly find in Chinese phones. The ones packaged in the China rom are widely used by Chinese market. Update to global rom to remove chinese apps.

Do I just go to http://en.miui.com/download-298.html and download the rom and install it?

http://en.miui.com/download-301.html and yes. Download to SD card or onto phone. Open system updates > options > update from file (or similar you'll work it out)

Or is there no need to?

It's up to you. There isn't a "need" but you may want to.

I had a nightmare time with fixing a Redmi Note 2. It took a lot of fiddling over a couple of weeks to get everything working without adware or bugs. I had to look at multiple different processes and in the end I had to use a variation of all the processes. Its a good phone now but was a lot of work. Would have paid $20 more if I could have avoided all the fuss.

But I think it depends on where you got it from. Sometimes you will get a clean Xiaomi system. Sometimes you will get a phone that is 90% virus.

    • Is there a way of knowing if your Rom is clean or not? The MIUI Version is: MIUI Global 7.2 | Stable 7.2.7.0.0(LHPCNDR)

      • The MIUI Version is: MIUI Global 7.2 | Stable 7.2.7.0.0(LHPCNDR)

Is clean. If you're sus on it … download from http://en.miui.com/download-301.html and open in system update tool.

        • Kk thanks, was weird that there was no "Australia" option in the locale though

      • You will know within a day of using the phone.

In my case there were repeated pop ups and random apps just installing on the phone. Also it seemed that they had corrupted the "Updater" app on the phone so that it could not be updated (easily).

Lets just say I was close to ordering a new phone and someone without as much tech savvy as myself and as much stubbornness definitely would have. hahaha

Yeah. Sucks being a nation with a population the size of some Chinese cities. They must have forgotten about us.

I would flash the official ROM as soon as you get the phone to be sure there isn't any malware or bloatware on there that may have been installed by any third party resellers (I have no experience with the company you bought from, so this is no sleight on them).
With the Redmi 3 Pro there is no official Global ROM, so I would be choosing between 2 options:
    1) Install the official Redmi 3 Pro ROM from Xiaomi (http://en.miui.com/download-298.html). After this you will have Chinese apps on there, and no Google Play/Google Play Services, so you'll need to look on the miui forums to install them (and decide if you trust whatever installer you are using to do that).
    2) Unlock the bootloader (using Xiaomi official unlock method), once you've done that you should be able to install a custom recovery (such as TWRP), and from there you could look to install an unofficial global rom from xiaomi.eu which will come with no Chinese apps, and will have Google Play etc installed.

I realise it's too late for you, but with my experience with Xiaomi (Redmi Note 2 and Mi 4) I would only buy a Xiaomi that has an official Xiamoi Global ROM available, or does not come with a locked bootloader (ideally, both, which is the case for the RN2 and Mi4).

This whole process is definitely a pain, but the phones are certainly priced right for ozbargainer-types :)

    • just make sure the rom you download is from http://en.miui.com/download-301.html (Redmi Note 3) and not from en.miui.com/download-298.html (Redmi 3 is a different phone)

I assume you got the Redmi Note 3 Pro as the Redmi 3 doesn't have a pro version and the Redmi Note 3 has been heavily advertised on this site.
