I am in a MASSIVE DILEMMA - I need a new phone and am constantly in the battle between purchasing the S7 outright via ebay with 20% discount or go onto a plan.
I'm currently in a sim only plan which is pretty good - $40/month no lock in with optus.
What is cheaper overall guys? Currently leaning towards buying phone outright and then using my current sim only thing.
But.. friend says it's cheaper going onto a plan?

You have the flexibility to jump ship to better deals over the next 2 years.
That's the key that most people don't factor in. Compare the cost and inclusions of plans (data, calls, texts) from 2 years ago to today - they're chalk and cheese.
If you can get on a month to month sim only plan, or even a 12 month sim only plan, you're likely to be better off since data requirements have been ballooning over recent years.
Outright is cheaper as long as you stay vigilant and always go for the best sim only plan.
Depends how much data you plan to use. The more expensive plans tend to be pretty good value if buying a high end phone.
Plans are only better if you need the extra data and calls they give you, otherwise better to buy outright.
Even if you need a lot of data and phone alloawance, its still better to buy and go on the generous BYO phone 12month plans going around

If you can get the phone (Aus-Stock) for cheaper than $960, then buy outright
$910.40 plus CR, so you'll be $50 better off… But you're not committed to a telco for 24 months, which is definitely worth buying outright for! You have the flexibility to jump ship to better deals over the next 2 years.
