Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday announced it reached an agreement to sell the company’s entry-level feature phone assets to FIH Mobile Ltd., a subsidiary of Hon Hai/Foxconn Technology Group, and HMD Global, Oy for $350 million. As part of the deal, FIH Mobile Ltd. will also acquire Microsoft Mobile Vietnam — the company’s Hanoi, Vietnam, manufacturing facility. Upon close of this deal, approximately 4,500 employees will transfer to, or have the opportunity to join, FIH Mobile Ltd. or HMD Global, Oy, subject to compliance with local law.

Guess feature phones still aren't obsolete yet, if Foxconn was willing to shell out $350 million for the rights to manufacture Nokia devices.

  • It'll never be the same Nokia that we once knew.

    • Always had a smile when I looked at the back of my n900 with the made in Finland stamped on the back.

Pure class if you ask me. And yes it won't be the same

Guess feature phones still aren't obsolete yet

Well no. There's around 4 billion people in the world that live in poverty and a smartphone isn't high on the agenda when you're barely surviving as a subsistence farmer and falling victim to early death from burning cow manure for heat inside your mud hut.

    • How do they charge their phones?

  • A 4G 1100?

    • Comes with Vr Goggles if you preorder

  • NoKia! Kia is not going to be impressed.

I think this is a very smart deal.
And note the brand is available for smartphones too, not just feature phones.
You can buy a very high spec android smartphone for $150, but it is called an elephone or teclast or chuwi or meizu. A lot of people sneer at them because of the unknown brands (and own goals like Ainol).
Stick the Nokia brand on the same device for $190 and it will fly off the shelves.

  • This could just be for the manufacturing assets. Extra plants for foxconn to spread its operations.

  • yay $2 feature phones FTW!

The question is — will Nokia Foxconn 3310 be indestructible?

    • 3310 could still be destroyed by a 5110 ;)

Ah, back in the days where if you dropped your phone, the battery compartment fell off and the battery fell out, but that was all that happened!

5110's battery was it's rear cover wasn't it? Ah the good old days where you'd have to walk down the road to dial 7 and carrier pigeons were still a faster mode of transferring data.

It was a quality brick nonetheless … wish someone actually laid some old 5110s into a brick wall as a sentiment to this beast.

5110's battery was it's rear cover wasn't it?

Yeah, was more referencing the 3310 in that regard :) Though I had a 3315, much cooler!

        • @Spackbace: I remember my 3315 fondly…great phone

        • @kywst:
          :,)

    • My Nokia 1800 seemed to be. Costing $10 with $29 credit in 2010 at BigW, it was a difficult decision to replace it with a Huawei Ascend Y550. I still miss going a week with only 2 charges and sometimes only 1.

  • Since Foxxconn took over Infocus they've been making really good phoned. Maybe the same will happen to Nokia.

    • Is it the same company as Infocus? I thought InFocus was an American brand.

Foxconn creates both the Xiaomi (China Brand) and Infocus (US Brand) phones though.
