EDIT: nevermind. The link works now.

  • If they dropped the advanced price id be all over it

    • I'm with you on the advance one.

      • Same - i'd be all over it

      • +2

Agree. If Advance version is below $1k, I will seriously consider it.

    • It might take a while to ship as they don't have everything in stock.
Made my order for DJI accessories on the 13th May and they still haven't shipped it yet.
Current status: Goods in Transit From Distributo

      • I ordered my P3 Adv on the 12th (night) and it is apparently going to be delivered today in Sydney….I hope.
TNT kept it in the Depo for 3 days, so their "express" option is not worth the extra money.

  • So this is the satandard? I thought the standard didn't have 4K?
Edit - OK, so it is the next one up from the standard.

    Very Tempting …..

    • This is the standard but with a 4K camera.
It's a bit confusing but the better version of this (ie. with 4K) is the Phantom 3 Professional.
Most people get the Advanced or Professional as it has much better range with Lightbridge and the better models also get a more premium remote controller.

      • The advanced seems the best bang for your buck unless you desperately need 4k of the Pro. the standard 4k as you say loses light bridge

      • +2

Not sure why this was down voted. This explanation is bang on for the phantom 3 series. 4K + light bridge (pro) > 2k with light bridge (advanced) > 4K + wifi (this)

  • I'm just starting to look into drones now, and I'm having trouble understanding why the cheaper (<$500) drones all have such rubbish cameras.
Like the standard is a "HD" 2mp 720p camera that's 5x larger than the 8mp 1080p @30fps camera my Samsung galaxy s2 had 5 years ago.

Can anyone enlighten me on this? Is it just a price cutting thing?

    • the Standard DJI model does 12mp stills and 1080 video.

    • +1

I think <$500 in drones atm are categorized as "toy drones".
You'll find anything nice is usually at least $1k.

      • Bit of a shame that. I've got 2 Gopro's lying around, so I've purchased a Cheerson CX20 from Banggood.
$300 for what's apparently a pretty decent phantom knockoff sounds like a good deal… Time will tell though.

        • Some of the Cheersons get a good review too and Banggood is a great price to get them for cheap.
Bought a dozen orders from them all without shipping insurance and all have arrived within a 3 week time frame.
The only slight issues with attaching a GoPro to any of the drones is the fact that you can't move the camera by the gimbal and also can't start/ stop the recording mid-flight.
It must all be done before take off.

        • From what I've read you can use this gimbal with the CX20.
I think you can also use wifi to get fpv and start stop recording if you gopro supports it, but I've heard the cheersons can react badly to the wifi interference. I'll do some testing.

    I have a DJI 4K.

If id had the money I would have bought the professional, but couldn't really justify that much money.
I was originally looking at the Standard model, but stretched the budget for the 4K camera.
Well worth the money. I have a mate who bought the standard at the same time. Looking at it on a big screen they look similar, until you look at detail in the distance of your images. His blurs out, where mine is still crisp and clean video.
Still, he paid $688 and me 1180'ish ( Kogan 20% off a while ago )

The reason I didn't stretch the budget to the professional with Lightbridge is all to do with how far away I am comfortable flying it from me.
Legally it is not allowed out of sight . And I don't want to not know where my expensive for me drone is…..
The 4K takes me far enough.
To be honest , the highest I have needed to go to grab fantastic images of my surroundings was 90m up, and about 30m away from me.

I will be buying an extra battery soon though…..

  • So the lightbridge gives better video signal further?

What are the limits on this 4k version?

    • +1

Yes Lightbridge should give you around 2 - 3km on average distance while this standard uses normal wifi.
I've been told the range is less than 1km.
Most people who get the Standard will later upgrade their controller with better antennas for the shortcomings.
Look for UAV Maxx ITElite antennas.
They have it for the Lightbridge as well.

If you read the forums there are many standard owners reporting all manner of transmission problems. Because the standard uses wifi, it is more susceptible to interference from wifi routers, microwaves etc, and either short range control or loss of control is reported. The advanced/pro uses 5GHz and has a longer range, so is less likely to have it lose contact and therefore lose control. Even if you aren't flying it kilometers away, I prefer to have strong control closer in, rather than lose control completely at short distances with the lower spec unit.

      • Thanks guys, I was thinking it's just the signal of the video feed that's not as good. Turns out it's weakness of the RC control signal too.

        Don't like that

Okay what about the advantages of pro vs advanced? Worth the extra $?

        • +1

The only difference is the camera is 4k vs 2.7k in the advanced (the pro has a higher bitrate in the recording circuitry to accommodate the 4k, but it's not missed in the adv with its slightly lower resolution). The pro comes with a 100w charger rather than the 70w in the adv, so battery recharges are marginally faster. Otherwise they are identical.

Is it worth it? Really depends on how important 4k is to you. Zooming in on a 4k image will give you a great 1080 image if you need to crop it, and you intend doing a lot of editing of your footage. I don't have a 4k TV, I couldn't justify $4-500 difference when they were full price, but they are a bit closer cost-wise now. I was going to get 4k just to future-proof the purchase, but I feared I would crash and write-off my adv while it was new, so I just got the adv for a cost/risk balance.

  • expired…….. (probably a good thing…… came within a whisker of buying)

  • I have the Standard and it is great fun.

The 2K image looks very good on my 4K TV however I wish it also did 1080/60fps which to me is better than 4K/30fps in many circumstances.

Not having light bridge has never been an issue for me and I've never had interference issues (I mainly fly away from built up areas). Trust me 100m elevation and 50m away from you doesn't seem like much but this is where I lose sight of the little white drone and have to rely on the camera feed - when it is windy 50m away can turn into 200m away in no time!

These drones will keep getting cheaper and better so moreso than ever the longer you wait the better off you'll be.
