Free Assistance With Your Tax Return - ATO

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Thought I might post this in connection with an AMA I have. Feel free to move it to the forums but personally I think it's a bargain!

ATO offers a free service to help individuals with their tax returns under certain circumstances:

You are eligible for Tax Help in 2015-16 if your income is around $50,000 or less for the income year and you did not:

work as a contractor, for example a contract cleaner or taxi driver
run a business, including as a sole trader
have partnership or trust matters
sell shares or an investment property
own a rental property
have capital gains tax (CGT)
receive royalties
receive distributions from a trust, other than a managed fund
receive foreign income, other than a foreign pension or annuity.

If you are eligble for this service that means your tax return is likely so basic that you may as well just do it yourself. Doing a basic tax return is very simple these days with etax. Enter tax file number, enter some numbers off your payslip, enter your health insurance information, press submit.

    • Ture. But people still have trouble

No deductions? Surely you spent something work related.
And I think this service is more to help people who struggle with computer literacy, as the paper forms are harder to get.

"Surely you spent something work related"
        Yes, always, regardless,… $300 ;-)

    • Agree. The exclusions are basically code for "We'll help you fill out two boxes on the form, but don't ask any questions that require us to actually know anything about tax".

  • Have a go at this question.

If something is always free, is it a bargain?

    • a) No
    • b) No
    • c) No
    • d) All of the above
    • Has it been posted to OzB before? That's all this post is trying to achieve hence why i stated not sure if a bargain or not…
