Reliable computer repair shop in Perth?

Hi

Can anyone recommend a laptop computer repair shop in Perth that charges reasonable prices and is reliable for checking a Toshiba laptop?

I have a 5 year old toshiba p750/02R laptop that is slow as hell even though its a i7-2630QM @ 2.00GHz with upgraded RAM to 8gb from original 4GB

I have also brought it back to orginal settings and used recovery disk to roll it back, clearing all files and software so nothing on it but Office and Chrome.

It was runing Windows 7 but since it was so slow I upgraded to Windows 10 and it fraction better but still plenty of lag, again only running Office and Chrome.

Its only used for internet browsing and word docs but its getting useless for both as so slow.

Here are some issues with it:

1) Start up time of laptop is from 90 seconds to 5 minutes

2) Slow to operate: As an example;

  • Right click start start button takes 40 to 90 seconds for menue to pop up.

  • Open Words, excel or chrome also takes upto 100 to 150 seconds to load up

  • Going to Task Manger takes from 60 to 90 seconds to come up

3) WIFI module: I think wifi is stuffed cause per the Task Manager charts, it shows wifi spiking up 100kbps down to zero every second and this is not the same on my laptop connected to same wifi modem.

However this only occurs when I run multiple tabs in chrome (10 tabs) and have Word and excel open.

4) Hard disk is always maxing to 100% on the Task Manager charts, it never drops below 100% even when idle

5) Bluray drive keeps popping open every few minutes

So yeah think I need to get it checked but not sure best place to take it?

I assume Toshiba Perth be expensive?

Also its out of warranty.

  • first check what process is causing your hard disk to be used at 100%, if its at 100% of course it will be super slow as there isnt much allocated for what you want to to. once you find out which process it is, google it like '_____ process 100% disk usage' and you will find answers

Just format it, I think it would solve a few of your problems.

Also replace the hard drive with an ssd.

Best thing in this case would be to buy & install a Solid State Drive to replace the mechanical hard drive. You can pick up something like a Samsung 850 Evo 500GB for $205 locally @ MSY.

Do a clean install of Windows 10 onto it. Manually download the core drivers (chipset, graphics card, etc) from the Toshiba support site (don't download any of the bloatware or Toshiba softwares). Reinstall any programs you use (Office, Chrome etc). Don't forget to backup all your documents and bookmarks etc.

It will be as fast (or faster) as a brand new laptop. It's quite easy and free to DIY - plenty of guides online to help you. Most places in Perth will charge an arm and leg I'm assuming. If you really want to pay someone to do it then perhaps PLE or other computer shops (not MSY) can provide you a quote.

If the bluray keeps popping out still you could try disabling it in device manager or unplugging it all together if you don't use it.

But if you much prefer to get someone to do it I would try someone like Netplus in Osborne Park.

    • Another vote for a SSD and a complete fresh reinstall. New drivers new everything. If that doesn't work then it might be time for an upgrade.

From Toshiba's website below are some toshiba service centres. Remember you can take it to them get a quote and say you'll think about it.

I used Portacom for warranty repairs on a Toshiba a couple of times, and their work was fine.

Though with a 5 year old laptop, I'd be wary of paying a shop for anything as it'd probably end up being more than the value of the PC.

Backup your data, reinstall windows, and clean up your fans would be a good start.

  • My husband has a Windows PC he uses for gaming and it developed a few "issues", so he took it to Centurion Computers at Centro Warwick - he said the guy there did a really good job, reasonable price and quick turnaround.

  • Thanks for all the advice…I think its time to jump on one those cheap SSD deals that keep popping up.

And I assume I can transfer my Windows 10 on it easy

    Thanks all!
