Comments on 5 Years Old HDD?

So here is the SMART data from Crystaldiskinfo - http://i.imgur.com/AIAx1We.png

This is a 5 year old HDD that came off a laptop I have bought on Gumtree. The power cycle count is only 98?!! Power on hours 84?!!

Also, please comment on if I can use this HDD reliably as a portable HDD.

Comments

  • says power on hours 14000

    • Yeah, but on the table below Power on hours and power cycle count shows different values, why?

      • Ignore the current and worst columns for these two. Its the raw value column you need to look at (it's in hexadecimal). Convert to decimal and you will get the same values as shown at the top.

  • Hard drives don't last forever, maybe 6 years. But the older the drive gets the more chance of a failure. I would not use it as a portable HDD.
"80% of hard drives last at least four years. 20% of them don't. Backblaze doesn't have data beyond the four years measured so far, but extrapolated the data to predict a median lifespan of over 6 years for most hard drives."
