eBay. Buyer 'Sniper' bid Later sent question & then wants to cancel

What are my options please? After 'sniper' bidding my listing and winning it, he then asked a question to clarify what I thought was already clear in the listing. Then he doesn't like the response, and he tells me "please cancel the bids, not gonna buy this one". Shipping prices had not been quoted in my listing (Contact seller for shipping quote), but he had not even bothered to ask me for a shipping quote for such a heavy item! He has not paid, and I have not yet shipped the item.

    Basically, don't roll over. Report them to ebay. If they are doing it often, they'll get banned.

      Yep, as sellers can't leave negative feedback anymore this is your only real way to punish time wasters.

      You'll need to wait a few days before you open an unpaid item case but make sure you do as soon as you can. Let it run its course and you'll get your fees refunded.

      I've got 2000 feedback and have been on Ebay since it started in Australia, and in all that time I have never had a single successful Second Chance offer taken up so don't pin your hopes on that. And thats assuming there even was another bidder anyway.

      Relist and add some freight estimates, and good luck second time around.

      • Thanks, I didn't know that sellers can't leave neg. feedback. I rarely sell, but I often buy, and I feel that the goodwill is very important. And so, if I buy something, then I always go through with it, no matter what.

    I think there is an option for 'second chance offer' where you give the second highest bidder the option of purchasing your item at the price it would have been had the 'winner' not placed his bid.

    I presume the other bids were suppressed because of the high shipping charges you quoted those bidders, so the last minute bidder may have thought they were getting a bargain.
    The buyer is very unlikely to pay, so consider the 2nd chance route.
    For next time, place some shipping estimates in the listing description (e.g. shipping to Sydney is $x, Brisbane $x, Perth $x contact me for other destinations) as that will both take a way work for you as those bidders in those locations won't have to ask questions, but might encourage bids from people thinking the shipping was even higher than what you quote.

      I agree, the main problem here is OP putting "Contact seller for shipping quote" instead of stating a shipping price (or doing pickup only).

      This is probably not a scammer, just a dumb kid who didn't read properly, saw an apparent bargain and went for it.

  • Shipping calculator would not work, and so I put in the description approx shipping cost and that people should contact me for an exact quote. In the end I charged shipping 'less than' what I had approximated in the description. There was no under-bidder.

      Since there was no other bidder it's not much of an issue. Just cancel the sale and relist the item.

    I would use the Second chance option and offer it to the previous bidder.
    you can also report to ebay for buyer non-performance.

    Consider listing it starting it at 99c I have had a few items where I had a starting price of say $1000 and relisted several times with no bidders, so thought I'd try a 99c start and sold the item for $1200, I may have had a "bidder" lined up incase it was going to go too cheap but havent needed it, people seem to get attached and keep justifying a paying a little bit more. Also had a non payer after a buy it now price once, listed it again and sold for over double the original but it now price so were happy in the end they cancelled.

  • sold a few things this happened a few times - really wasn't worth the bother to me and it didn't bother me, i just relisted. either offer it to the next bidder or relist it. selling on ebay is not worth it

  • These buyers are so annoying. Wait till the buyer does not pay and give them a non paying strike. Three of these and they are banned. Such time wasters. I also detest those sellers who constantly cancel their auctions at the last minute cause they don't like the price being offered They should start the auction at a price they are happy to accept. I suggest using gumtree or else make it clear in the auction to contact you for postage.

  • HI, I sell on Ebay and this happens every now and then. If you are happy to allow the buyer to renege, you have 2 options:
    1) the fastest way since you agree to the cancellation and nothing has been paid, you go to the SITE map on ebay and request a cancellation (you will find it also under drop down menu below your 'sold' item) Your reason? You tick that the 'buyer has requested to cancel order' . Tell the buyer that when the ebay request comes through, he/she must 'agree' - I am sure he will happily agree to the cancellation

    As soon as Ebay gets the agreement, you will get all your sellers fees back from EBay - this is the fastest way, no more than 2 days, and you can now relist. It is quick because no exchange of money has taken place.

    2) If you want to DRAG this on the slow way and also be vindictive :) :) :), you wait for a longggggg period until the payment deadline is not met, and then only will Ebay allow you to lodge a non-payment case. You then wait another period for the buyer (not) to respond before Ebay closes the case and issues a negative strike against the buyer, and gives you back seller's fees. In the meantime whilst all this is happening you cannot relist your item - in case the buyer mulls about it and decides he WILL pay. See how much more time is wasted this way? Also, once ebay issues negative strike, you are not allowed to give negative feedback - Ebay always protects the buyer, not the seller. With Option 1) also if you open the cancellation case, the option to give negative feedback is not there, as it is regarded as 'mutual' once the buyer agrees to cancellation.

    I always choose the first option as everything is settled within 1-2 days and I can relist. The 2nd option is a long process that can take more than 14 days. Unless you really want to issue a negative strike against the buyer, you would not choose option 2. People do change their minds as everyone is human and for me, unless the person is known to be a habitual non-payer, I would not waste time waiting to have a negative strike issued. After this you can add the buyers ebay name to your 'blocked' list if you so wish.

  • I raised a case, and once the case expired, ebay still charged me a final value fee. They added the information note "This unpaid item case expired on 28 Jun, 2016. You will not receive a final value fee credit."
    I will never use ebay again to sell anything!
    "If a sale isn't completed with a buyer, a final value fee will still apply. However, sellers may be eligible for a final value fee credit in this case."

  • HI, 7 days after you open an unpaid case, and not getting any response or payment from the buyer, you need to close the case before the expiry date, and you should get your seller fees back. But if you forgot to close the case and the expiry date came by, Ebay will not refund the fees. Before you opened the case, it helps to request the buyer to mutually 'cancel transaction.' If they want out of the purchase, they usually 'agree' to cancel and as long as they agree, you get your fees back. But if they did not respond to your request to cancel the transaction, you can then open an unpaid item dispute but remember to close it after 7 days and you get your fees, as well as buyer gets negative strike. I believe the onus is on the seller to close the case before expiry.
