Bicycle Insurance in VIC

Hi fellow ozbargainers,

I have been riding an electric bike to commute from my house to the train station. I normally park it in the Parkiteer cage but due to a construction project the cage will be removed for 18 months. I am considering taking out my very first bike insurance but running into a lot of questions.

To summarise here are what I know so far:

  • Most bike insurance providers cover my bike because it's pedal assisted with a 240w motor
  • None of the providers however lists my bike model (probably because it's a Chinese brand). Either can I find the serial number of the bike
  • My bike is worth about $1500 and Wiggle is the cheapest so far at $100/pa + $250 damage/$350 theft excess
  • NRMA has a cheaper excess at $200 but by the look of it they don't offer anything in VIC. Their premium is higher at $160/pa.

It doesn't seem like I have a lot of choices here and the missing model/serial is definitely not helping. Just wondering if anyone with similar experience can shed some light.

TIA.

Max

Forgot to put in the title that no retarded time wasters

  • I assume you mean for loss/theft, not for damage or injury?
Are you sure it isn't covered by your contents insurance?
Have you called the insurers and discussed coverage for your model?
Sorry - I know lots of questions and no answers.
The bike looks cool though - do you like it?

    • NP Ted, any idea is welcome. It's actually for damage or theft as I need to park at an open area next to the train station for next 18 months. I never talked to my home insurance provider but for just $100 extra I guess it would be good for me to have the medical cover (touch wood!)? Plus the home insurance has like $600 of excess.

The bike is solid. TailG is like the top premium brand in China for electric bikes. The build is really good. The only downside of my foldable model is the small frame and small pedaling swing. Well, that's the largest size I could bring with me so not really their fault.

      • I've got my pushie added to my home and contents insurance, it was considerably better value than a stand alone policy.

  • Ride to another train station?

    • I need to ride on a really busy road for 5km going to another station. It's stressful especially at night when I ride home after work.

I pay a bit extra on the home contents insurance for 'specified portables'. Can't remember exactly how much, but somewhere between $50-100 extra.
