What Simple Streaming Box Media Centre Thingy Should I Get for Plex, Netflix, Catchup TV

Hi there. I am in the market for a streaming box. At our house we use Plex for streaming our movies as well as 3rd party channels such as SS Plex and Let Me Watch This. We also have Netflix and watch a bit of catchup tv from the fta channels.

I run Plex off my old laptop plugged into the telly or Chromecast it, Netflix is chromecasted and the catchups are hdmi from the laptop. Now I am the only one remotely techie in the houshold and I'm a fair noob. The easiest option for the whole household is a box with a remote that has all the things we need on it.

The Telstra TV has recently caught my eye, it has Netflix and catchup tv on it and apparently you can install Plex. Does anyone know if I can install my 3rd party channels on one like I did with Plex on my laptop for streaming movies so I can watch those channels?

Are there any other units people can recommend? The $109 price tag of Telstra TV is the top price I'm willing to pay.

Thanks in advance for any answers!

I have a US Roku 3 and its great apart from the lack of local channels. The Telstra TV is based on the Roku 2 and has the local channels so if you can put plex on it I would go for that.

You can also get a Wintel Pro Win10 box from china. It'd set you back slightlly more than $110 but you'd get a z8300 machine with 2GB of RAM with OS built in, and pretty much everyone is familliar with Windows.

  • Plex + Chromecast

  • Cheers for the replies. I have a Chromecast which I do use Plex with but I want to do away with the laptop it runs off as it's nearing death and the other members of the house can't use it if I'm not home.

With the Xbox and Telstra TV does anyone know if you install Plex can you use the 3rd party channels such as Let Me Watch This and Icefilms to stream tv and movies?

The Wintel Pro looks pretty sweet but a tad above my budget, even moreso if you add in the cost of a remote.
