Hi everyone,

What is the best way to travel to and from Melbourne airport to Melbourne City?

Detail:

1030 pm pick up from Airport

From my research it will cost $19 per person to bus and normal taxi only take 4 people.

Is this a round trip? If so then why not hire a car? https://www.carhood.com.au/

    • I'm only there for 3 days and it is always hard to fine parking in the city.

It might actually be cheaper for you to rent a car to get down from the airport if there is 5 of you. I did that one time, which worked out well. Got in late, park in the city offstreet. Got up early the next day to move the car and to go to a few places outside of the city. At the end of the first day, return the car at the depot in the city. Spend the next day just walking around the city. On the last day, rent the car again and drove around, and then return the car at the airport.

My brother and his family tried something else. He sent his family down in an uber with the luggage and he took the skybus down. Worked out about the same I guess.

Maxi Cab - should be around $70 from airport to city

    • I was thinking about that too, waiting for a few quotes.
Any that you have used and are reliable?

      • +1

Well my friend has a 'number' that reaches an extended family of cab drivers that picks us up off the books at fixed rate.

But 13 CABS should be fine (largest melb cab service). Estimate here:

Just turn up at the airport cab rank and they'll radio through for a Maxi cab which will be with you in 2 minutes at the taxi queue. Don't bother booking beforehand there will be plenty of them there waiting, unlike Sydney the airport operates 24 hours.

If you want the bus Starbus is a little cheaper than Skybus at $30 return and the added bonus of not having to change buses, although you might have to make one or two stops in the city.

For 5 people though I would get a Maxi Taxi, it will just be easier and cheaper.

    organise a maxi taxi?
you save a little over the bus option
    https://www.13cabs.com.au/?ca=website.fare_estimate
Prices given are an estimate only based on kilometres travelled.
The actual fare may vary due to traffic conditions, alternate routes, weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
The estimated fare does not include road tolls, airport and public holiday surcharges.

if you want cheaper you could always look at those non registered services (ie UBER without the APP) but use at own risk

You can order an Uber X from the Airport, simply put the pin outside of the airport and when the trip is accepted, call the driver and tell them the location of the pickup. From Airport to city is about $30. Just get two ubers if you have more than 4x people. Clean car, nice friendly driver, free water and mints, what more can you ask for.

    • i am new to this Uber thing.
Is it easy to get picked up in the Airport?
is there lots of driver in the airport area? even at 11pm at night?

      • +4

Yes, I am an uber driver, theres always ubers waiting outside the airport for trips like this. Simply book the uber by placing pin outside of airport, call the driver and advise location of pickup. It's best to wait near the hotel public pickup area at front of airport on ground floor and advise the bay number for him to come to. Always plenty drivers even at 11pm. Good Luck!

        • Just a quick one, are you sure it is only $30 for a Uber trip from melb airport to melb city?

        • Would you fit four peoples luggage in one Uber? It would need to be a station wagon unless they just have hand luggage.

        • +1

Interesting. I use Uber a lot and knew of this trick but hadn't done it because I wasn't sure how the drivers would feel about it (change of pickup location, even though it's pretty obvious what is happening).

          @rcarlos108:

You can use the app to get a fare estimate even if not booking (do it around the same time of night though).

        • Hey drezy, which hotel public pickup area do you mean ? I am flying in with Tiger tomorrow (T4) and want to do this but can't see where you mean on Google earth. I understand the first bit about booking. Cheers mate.

          P.S. I can't send you a PM..

        • +2

          @Fitzy777:

          Hi Fitzy,

If you're arriving at T4 best to get the uber to pick you up from T4 Public Pickup / Drop Off Area (in the new multi level car park)

The hotel public pickup is between the front of T1/2/3 and the Hilton Hotel on the ground level.

          Cheers

@drezy: All good mate. $37 from Airport to East Melb accommodation, less the $20 promo. Awesome, cheers mate.

    • Just keep your fingers crossed that you are not injured in an accident. There won't be any insurance unless he is one of those rare Uber drivers who has registered.

      • hahaahahahahahhahahah wtf

        • Yep. One of those rare Ubers with compulsory TAC… it's such a shame the government is subsidising them with Uber fees.

  • you can always take public transport to the airport.
Get a public bus from the airport and get off at either Essendon trainstation or Broadmeadows.
Get a train into the city.
    Assumes you have a myki.

    • +2

They are travelling at 10.30-11.00pm. I wouldn't do this option personally at that time of night. Especially not when you have the economies of scale of multiple travellers in one vehicle.

      • +1

I would. I doubt you would get any where near $3.90 per person. and 10:30-11 at night isn't really that late considering the buses from the airport run quite late and if it's on a weekend trains go all night.

        • +2

You're male? As a female, I wouldn't. If I was a large built guy, my answer would be different.

        • +1

          @sparkles:
even if you're travelling with 4 other people?

Have you ever traveled at night using PT on your own?

        • you're kidding right? 5 travellers, luggage bags/ overnight bags etc going up and down public bus, then the trains. And how long wait from Broadmeadows station to get train into city at that time of night? Without a pre bought MYKI for all 5. Does the airport have a MYKI kiosk where they can buy MYKI card? Just use the airport bus so all 5 travel in 1 vehicle instead of being separated into 2 taxis, Uber or not.

  • +2

I took a skybus. It was a good price and had free hotel transfers.

    • +1

Hmm… the hotel transfers finish earlier than the skybus I think. So if you get into the city via skybus at night, you may have to walk to your hotel because the hotel transfers have finished for the day.

I know someonw who I used before, and my friends use to go around Melbourne. Send me a pm and I'll send you the details.

What is the best way to travel to and from Melbourne airport to Melbourne City?

The best way is by Helicopter.

    • +1

      Yes. Bronwyn Bishop approves.

  • This is not an option in this particular case but I thought I would chuck it in, for what it is worth.
A neighbour of mine turned 60 recently so he got his Senior Travel Card in the mail. He doesn't use it much, but did recently when he had to get to Melbourne Airport for a flight.
He was in no hurry, so he caught the 901 bus from Dandenong all the way to the Terminal. It took nearly 3.5 hours, but he said he enjoyed the ride.
    The fare was $1.10.

  • With all the promotion and tips summoning Uber around Melbourne Airport by OzBargainers, I reckon the taxi drivers are going to lose big time making an income. Wonder if they might end up ditching taxi license and make more being Uber full time.
